What is Osteopathy?
For those of you not familiar with osteopathy, it is a holistic form of manual medicine that focuses on full body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework, which includes the joints, muscles and spine. Through this treatment, osteopaths do not just focus on your symptoms, but aim to balance the mechanics of the body to treat the underlying cause. As a result of this holistic approach, osteopathic treatment also positively affects the body’s nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems.
Osteopathy is a philosophy-based approach to healthcare. This philosophy informs and underlies every aspect of examination, treatment, diagnosis and management. These are the key principles:
- The body is a single unit
- Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated
- The body has self-healing and self-regulating mechanisms
Osteopathy is safe for all age groups.
Osteopaths undergo five years of university training and are government registered, allied health professionals.
What do osteopaths treat?
Osteopathy is best known for the treatment of a wide variety of musculo-skeletal problems and can help you reduce your symptoms, manage your pain and improve your quality of life if you suffer from any of the following conditions:
- Back and neck pain
- Headache and migraine
- Sports injuries, including tendinitis, tennis elbow, shin splints
- Women's health issues
- Postural strains
- Chronic pain
- Arthritis
- Work related injuries
Osteopathy can also play a significant role in the management of a number of other conditions. When used in conjunction with medical treatment, it can help reduce the severity of your symptoms in conditions such as asthma, arthritis, gynaecological dysfunction, digestive problems and chronic fatigue.
Pregnancy care
Many mothers-to-be find osteopathic treatment very beneficial both to reduce back pain during pregnancy and also to help prepare the body for birth.
In addition, there is a wide variety of gentle non-manipulative techniques for use on infants and small children.
What to expect from an osteopathic treatment
Your initial consultation is approximately an hour. This allows time for
- A thorough case history
- An examination of the body to help assess the problem and form a diagnosis
- Discussion of a treatment and management plan, which may include home management advice
- Caroline uses a broad range of gentle hands-on treatments, including soft tissue massage, stretching, articulation, mobiliisation and manipulation of joints.
Depending on the condition, follow-up osteopathic treatments may be required. A follow up appointment is 30 minutes.
Health Funds
Osteopathic treatment is covered under the ancillary or extras cover of most major health insurers. Ask your health fund.
