Apostolidis - Fasciatherapy
What is Fascia?
Fascia is the tissue located between the skin and the underlying structure of muscle and bone, and forms a seamless web covers and connects the muscles, organs, and skeletal structures in our body.
Hence, the fascia is responsible for maintaining our body's structural integrity, supporting our posture, and acting as a shock absorber.
Fasciae are very sensitive to stress. In a normal healthy body, the fascia is relaxed and soft.
It can stretch and move without restriction. However, it becomes tight and restricted when your body experience prolonged or repeated stress, physical trauma or inflammation of the fascia. Trauma such as whiplash or habitual poor posture can have a cumulative effect over time and tighten the fascia.
What is Fasciatherapy?
Fasciatherapy treatment a very specific, hands-on technique that focuses primarily on connective tissue and not so much on the muscular system. This form of soft tissue therapy used to treat dysfunction, accompanying pain and restriction of motion.
This is accomplished by relaxing contracted muscles using slow and deep compression. Increasing circulation, venous and lymphatic drainage, and stimulating the stretch reflex of muscles and overlying fascia.
How does it work ?
Implementing lighter and slower movement at the onset of treatment can produce profound results over long term. The touch, slower and less traumatic to the muscle than some of the massages, the touches of fasciatherapy do not rush the body and you will experience increased physical, mental and emotional balance in addition to your pain relief and improved posture.
The therapeutic treatments offered could be helpful for many physical problems of the different types of conditions affecting the human musculoskeletal system, for example:
• Cervicogenic Headaches – Neck related headaches
• Tension headaches
• Jaw pain
• Shoulder and Elbow injuries including golfer’s elbow
• Adhesive capsulitis – Frozen shoulder
• Wrist pain - carpel tunnel - RSI ( Repetitive Strain Injury)
• Upper Back and Rib pain
• Lumbosacral /Lower Back pain including Sciatica
• Pelvic pain
• Breathing restrictions
This is not an exhaustive list and represents a sampling of the different types of conditions affecting the human musculoskeletal system.
The holistic approach encourage different advanced therapy techniques, described as follows:
Fascia and Membrane Technique
The aim of the Fascial and Membrane Techniques (FMT) developed by Peter Schwind is to gain a physiologically favourably mobility between the individual components of restricted areas, e.g. mobility restrictions in the ribcage. Furthermore, it is based on the basic osteopathic theme of mobilisation and the form-stabilising approach according to Ida P. Rolf’s Structural Integration.
Peter Schwind, Ph.D., certified advanced Rolf practitioner, Dr. Ida P. Rolf developed the system of Structural Integration
Myoskeletal Alignment Therapy ( MAT)
This technique is to relieve neck and back pain, which is often a result of tight and shortened muscles that give rise to the lack of symmetry in the skeletal system.
A session with MAT is a combination of deep tissue massage and stretching to treat the weak inhibited muscles. The goal is to achieve a pain free movement and mobility of the body.
Deep Tissue Massage
A form of bodywork that aims to relieve tension in the deeper layers of tissue in the body.Deep Tissue Massage is a highly effective method for releasing chronic stress areas due repetitive motions and misalignment.
Sports Massage
Sports Massage enhances performance and prolongs a sports career by helping to prevent injury, reduce pains and swelling in the body, relaxes the mind, increase flexibility, and Sports Massage is also highly effective in aiding the rapid recovery of an athlete from an injury. This technique consists of invigorating massage techniques such as Myofascial release - transverse friction to release adhesions. Gentle stretching and the Myofascial release techniques help restore and improve balance, range of motion.
How do I prepare for my first session ?
Befor the session, it is helpful to have adequate rest and to eat a light meal ...and a glass of water prior to each session for sufficient energy and hydration. Your body requires energy in the form of food and water to function! Myo/Fasciatherapy is not a "passive" type therapy. You will be moving and expending energy at times.
The first Session:
The first thing that will happen we will sit down and talk, we review your health history - the questionnaire you have completed. Then followed by a comprehensive initial evaluation of the Human structure and mobility this will allow me to identify the root cause of your symptoms.
What to wear:
Be prepared to remove all jewellery and secure long hair.
To release fascial restrictions, it is necessary for me to touch your skin. Men may choose to wear briefs, loose stretchy shorts or swim trunks. Women may wear loose stretchy shorts and their regular bra or a sports bra or a two-piece swim suit.
Lotion and Hair products:
Please do not use any lotions or oils on the day of your appointment. Your skin needs to be clean and dry for this technique. Some hair products interfere with treatment of the head and neck.
Myo/Fasciatherapy vs. Massage
The purpose of Massage is to decrease muscle pain and tension, increase circulation, and produce a sense of well-being. Its goal is relaxation and generally works with the muscular system. Massage can be therapeutic but it doesn’t ask the system to find new ways to organise itself. Unlike massage, Myofascia/Fasciatherapy is a manipulation of the connective tissue ( Fascia).
Considering connective tissue encompasses many tissues and structures including bone, fascial envelopes, nerves, blood cells, and other tissue.
Thus the primary cause is within the connective tissue – fascial system - the muscle fibre tissue is affected as a secondary problem.
Myo/Fasciatherapy simulates the physical structure to find new ways to organise, realign and move. The goal is to improve posture, flexibility, increase range of motion of joints, and educate clients in movement and self-awareness. It dissolves old patterns that cause harm and chronic pain. Massage can release tension in your muscles but Myo/Fasciatherapy addresses the source of that tension. Your muscles will only work as well as the connective tissue allows it to. And if the connective tissue is thick and rigid you cannot move efficiently nor relax properly.
