What to expect

Assessment

Your initial consultation involves a comprehensive medical history and examination. The primary objective of this session is to identify the nature of your complaint, so that a logical and effective treatment plan can be implemented. At times, further tests may be required such as x-rays, blood tests or CT scans to help identify the exact nature of your complaint.

Explanation of your problem

We believe that you understanding the nature of your problem is a key factor in you getting better.

Treatment

The method of treatment selected will depend on the reason you are seeking treatment. However, a number of techniques including; acupuncture, massage, joint mobilisation, herbal medicine, and rehabilitation exercises may be employed.

Advice

Brett will give you advice on how you can manage your problem and help prevent it from returning. This may include explaining and demonstrating how you can modify your work desk & chair or car seat to reduce neck or back pain.

Preventative care

You don’t need to be unwell or in pain to have treatment.

As we all know “prevention is better than cure” so once you are well, monthly treatment can help you stay well. This may take the form of hands-on stretching, mobilisation and massage techniques to maintain flexible muscles and mobile joints or acupuncture to help maintain internal balance and wellbeing.

Clinical Myotherapy

Clinical myotherapy is a branch of manual medicine which focuses on the treatment and management of musculoskeletal pain. This involves an extensive physical evaluation of muscles, joints and nerves and is used in the treatment of acute or chronic conditions and injury prevention.
Clinical myotherapists have completed a 4yr bachelor of health science in which they have extensively studied areas such as anatomy, physiology, diagnosis and hands-on manual skills like joint mobilisation, dry-needling and soft tissue/massage techniques.

At leaps & bounds health Brett Rawlings is your clinical myotherapist. His philosophy is to treat the person and not the diagnosis. This does not mean that your problem won’t be addressed, but he will assess your entire musculoskeletal system and eliminate tight muscles and/or restricted joints that might be contributing to your chief complaint. He will then focus on your chief complaint.

"Treating pain is often a complicated process involving evaluation of the the muscles, joints and nerves as well as reviewing the patient's work environment, diet, sporting activities or hobbies and emotional state. To treat the diagnosis often means you don't treat the cause" Brett Rawlings

Clinical myotherapy should not be confused with myotherapy/remedial massage. The current level of education for myotherapists is a 2yr diploma of massage/remedial massage.

Clinical myotherapists have completed a 4yr bachelor of health science and assess and treat nerves, muscles and joints. They may use massage as part of your treatment just like a manual physiotherapist or osteopath does.

When should you visit a clinical myotherapist?

If you have musculoskeletal pain or have noticed that you are finding a particular activity difficult, you should make an appointment.

Clinical myotherapists can also help you prevent injury by taking care of your musculoskeletal system and showing you exercises and other techniques for maintaining a fit and healthy body that will allow you to perform at your best.
Some people choose to visit Brett for clinical myotherapy treatment once a month in order to prevent injury and help maintain a healthy and functional musculoskeletal system.
