Tui Na - Chinese Massage

Tuina (Tui Na) is an Oriental Bodywork Therapy that has been used in China for 2,000 years.

This therapy involves the use of hand techniques to massage the soft tissue (muscles and tendons) of the body to realign the musculoskeletal and ligamentous relationships. The application of Herbal poultices, oils, liniments, and salves are also used to enhance the therapeutic methods.

Through the application of massage techniques, Tuina seeks to establish a more harmonious flow of Qi through the system of channels and collaterals, allowing the body to naturally heal itself.

Tuina uses the traditional Chinese medical theory of the flow of Qi through the meridians as its basic therapeutic orientation.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is considered as the primary therapeutic modality of internal medicine.

There are approximately 250 Chinese herbs that are commonly used today. Treatment involves a selection of herbs which are combined into formulas that are designed to adapt to the specific needs of individual patients. As with diet therapy, each herb has one or more of the five flavours/functions and one of five "temperatures" ("Qi") (hot, warm, neutral, cool, cold). After determining the energetic temperature and functional state of the patient's body, a mixture of herbs are prescribed that are tailored to balance disharmony.

A herbal formula can contain anywhere from 3 to 25 herbs. One classic example of Chinese herbal medicine is the use of various mushrooms, like reishi and shiitake, which are currently under intense study by ethnobotanists and medical researchers for immune system enhancement.
