Moshe Feldenkrais, (1904-1984) was a qualified Mechanical Engineer & Dr. of Physics. A keen interest in the martial arts, & a personal knee injury led to a lifetime study of the structure & functioning of humankind, & the relationship between human development, education & movement.

Habits and their connection to back, neck and shoulder pain.
Habits, or habitual movement and thought patterns, are good in that they enable us to do complicated activities quickly and easily without having to consciously think about how we do them. Unfortunately they can also be harmful in that, if used for long enough, they actually distort our skeletal structure and cause back, neck and shoulder pain.
This is particularly true for people who do repetitive movements at work, especially if they are strongly right or left handed, or for one sided sports, eg. tennis, golf and swimming (if you breathe only on one side). Stand still and slowly swing your arms around you, notice that one side is easier to turn to than the other.
It is not easy to change habits consciously, but you can give yourself more choices of movement with the Feldenkrais Method® which gives you the experience of moving in non-habitual ways that can counteract our habits. The Feldenkrais Method® can also lengthen muscles, open up joints and get pressure off nerves, improve mobility, posture and breathing, making movement a joy again.
Here are a few ideas to try each day.
- Clean your teeth with the toothbrush in your opposite hand. It will feel strange at first, but if you persevere, it will get easier.
- When you go to the toilet, try wiping your self with the non-habitual hand!
- Notice which leg you stand on first when you put your pants on in the morning. Find several other ways to do it!
- When you interlock your fingers, notice which thumb is on top. Undo them and try with the other thumb and fingers interlocked. Do it with the back of your hands together. Do it behind your leg. I found 46 different ways to do it!
- Try sleeping on the other side of the bed, or of your partner. Swap every few weeks.
- If you do a regular walk, try going in the opposite direction. Find lots of different routes. Don’t do the same one every day!
- Notice which leg you tend to take the most weight on and try putting it on the other leg or both legs.
- Notice which buttock you tend to take most weight on when you sit, and vary that.
- At work, get up and stretch every ½ hour. Look out the window, varying your focus and breathe deeply into your belly.
These things may seem trivial, but they have far reaching effects, and you will soon feel the difference when you stimulate your bodymind this way. Awareness through Movement® classes and private Functional Integration® lessons are available. You will gently learn to move in non-habitual ways to release overworking muscles (and thereby pain) and allow your skeleton to come into its’ best alignment. The FM is suitable for all ages.
I am always delighted when my clients develop enough awareness to realise how many of their problems come from what they do to themselves and by changing the way they move they can relieve their own back, neck or shoulder pain.
