What is Reiki?Reiki (Ray-Key) is a Japanese word meaning “Universal Life Energy”. Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered the natural healing art of Reiki in the late 1800’s. The Usui system of Reiki healing, or Usui Shiki Ryoho, applies this energy through gentle touch for the purpose of healing. The practice of Reiki does not involve any belief system. People with diverse religious beliefs practice Reiki.
What is a Reiki Treatment like?Reiki Treatments are conducted with the person fully clothed and generally lying on a massage table. The giver simply places their hands in various positions on the head and body of the receiver. The receiver usually experiences deep relaxation and a feeling of peace and well being. There is usually also relief of pain. The giver also experiences relaxation as the Reiki energy flows through them as well. The receiver may feel the energy as heat, cold, vibration, tingling or it may not be felt.
Why Learn Reiki?Reiki is first and foremost an art for healing and promoting the development of the self, thus self treatment is the foundation of the Usui system of Reiki. Reiki can also be used to treat others. A Reiki treatment supports the whole person physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. In treating others the giver also receives the energy, so both giving and receiving Reiki is enjoyable and beneficial.
How is Reiki Taught?Reiki is taught by Masters of the Usui system of Reiki.
Reiki 1- Reiki 1 classes are usually taught in three-hour sessions over four consecutive days. Each student is attuned to the energy, taught the history of Reiki and the basic hand positions used in treating themselves and others. A considerable amount of class time is devoted to practicing Reiki on themselves and other students, with the opportunity to share experiences and ask questions. After completing Reiki 1 there is no need for any further involvement with the Reiki Master, however those that wish to attend regular gatherings to give and receive Reiki are most welcome.
Reiki 2- In Reiki 2 students who have been practicing Reiki 1 for a minimum of several months, are taught methods for sending Reiki at a distance and for furthering mental, spiritual and emotional healing in oneself and others.
