What is Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a rich history that spans over 2000 years. It incorporates Acupuncture, Massage, Herbal Medicine, Diet Therapy and Breathing Exercises. Often these modalities are combined, in order for you to receive the best possible therapeutic outcome.

Chinese Medicine works on the principle that Qi (energy) circulates through the body and when this energy is insufficient or becomes blocked disease occurs. Practitioners believe the decrease or blockage of this energy comes about because of stress, inappropriate diet or environmental factors.

To remedy this, the practitioner will collate information from a questionnaire to treat you. An acupuncture or herbal treatment will then be prescribed that treats your health issues specifically. This is adjusted at each visit to coincide with the improvement in your condition.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the skin at carefully selected points known as acupuncture points. There are 12 (bilateral) channels corresponding to each internal organ – acupuncture points are found on these channels.

Acupuncture works by moving blockages within these channels. There is an old Chinese saying – ‘When there is blockage there is pain’.

Acupuncture also assists the body by strengthening immunity, assisting in avoiding the flu and keeping hay-fever and asthma at bay.

What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine is one of the fastest and most effective methods of treatment. There are over 450 herbs, animal and mineral extracts which are used in combination.

Some herbs are as simple as ginger, rose, fennel and chrysanthemums. Each person receives their own individualised herbal preparation.

Herbs may be taken in:

  • Raw form - which you cook into a tea.

  • Powders - herbs are ground into a fine powder and taken with water

  • Pills - a convenient option for those taking herbs long term

  • Tinctures - herbs are soaked in alcohol and a few drops of the liquid are dissolved under the tongue.
