ABOUT REIKI

What is Reiki? (pronounced Ray-key)

Well perhaps it is best to start by saying what Reiki is not.

Reiki is not:
  • A cult;
  • A religion;
  • Something you can teach yourself or learn from a book or the internet;
  • A form of massage;
  • A gag, joke, or prank;
  • Easily explained without having experienced it for yourself.

Reiki is:
  • Best experienced first hand to know what it is and what benefits it can bring to you;
  • Universal Life Force Energy – being the energy that is at the very core of all creation. It is the energy upon which everything is built, from atoms, through to matter and even our thoughts;
  • A means of bringing balance, harmony and healing to your whole being (body, mind and spirit);
  • Excellent in relieving stress, which is widely recognised as being the cause of many major illnesses, diseases and medical conditions in this modern world;
  • Able to reduce the effects and occurrence of anxiety;
  • Able to reduce recovery times after an operation;
  • Able to give pain relief
  • An excellent form of treatment where a condition precludes the use of any therapies such as chiropractic, osteopathic or massage – eg herniated disc or osteoporosis;
  • Easily learned, regardless of age or educational standards;
  • A complimentary therapy and free from any contraindications, meaning it can be used in conjunction with any medication and other treatments to assist in healing without causing any harm;
  • Once learned, and if interested, it can be utilised as a spiritual practice to assist one’s own learning and spiritual growth;
  • Finally, Reiki is a vibrational energy technique that uses what is referred to as the universal life energy to improve the overall health and well-being of an individual. It does so by balancing and harmonising the mind, body and indeed soul of the recipient.

Where does it come from?

The history of Reiki is one that has traditionally been passed down from Master to student verbally and so the details may vary, however, the essence of its history generally remains the same.

Reiki was discovered in Japan in the mid 1800’s by a Buddhist monk named Dr Mikao Usui (the first Grand Master of Reiki). Through extensive study of the Sanskrits and other ancient religious texts, as well as various meditation techniques, Dr Usui was able to re-discover the sacred symbols associated with healing practices and the method in which to use them to bring about healing within an individual.

Although Reiki as we know it was discovered and implemented by Dr Usui in the mid 1800’s, it is suggested that evidence has been found to support the existence of Reiki in Tibet and India up to 6,000 years ago and in Egypt as far back as the time of the Pharos and beyond.

Reiki was brought to the West in the 1970’s by a Japanese born Hawaiian woman known as Hawaya Takata, who was the third Grand Master of Reiki. From there it has spread to every continent in the world and is widely recognised and used globally today.

How does it work?

Physics has proved that everything in the universe, when reduced to its most basic form, is made up of energy (electrons, neutrons, atoms etc). Through stress or injury, our physical body becomes depleted of vitally needed energy and by attempting to draw additional energy from within different parts of itself, the body becomes out of balance. This imbalance can show itself in any number of conditions, including lack of sleep, inability to think clearly, anxiety, eating disorders, physical ailments and disease.

A Reiki Practitioner acts as a conduit to allow the individual to connect to the source of universal life energy, enabling them to draw sufficient energy from that source to re-balance and re-plenish their own energy reserves. Receiving a Reiki treatment is similar to allowing an electric sub-station to re-connect with the main power station, so that it is able to feed electricity to all of the individual households within the body.

Who does the healing?

It is actually the recipient who does the healing. The Reiki Practitioner simply makes his or herself available as a tool, enabling you to take responsibility for your own well-being and to heal yourself. The Practitioner does little more than re-charge and re-balance the main energy points of the body (known as Chakras) by allowing you to instinctively draw as much energy as you need in order to achieve this.

Your body knows what it requires in order to heal itself and therefore in order to receive the full benefits of Reiki, all you have to do is relax and approach each treatment with an open mind.

How does the energy flow?

The energy flows through the Practitioner’s hands and may be experienced by the recipient as heat, cool, tingling or other such sensations.

What are the Chakras?

The Chakras are the main points within the body from which you draw the universal life energy. There are 7 main Chakras, situated at both the front and back of the body.

What can I expect to happen in a treatment?

When you attend for a Reiki treatment the practitioner will ask you to remove your shoes, jewellery, glasses, belts and any other article of clothing that may dig into you or cause you discomfort while receiving the treatment.

You will be asked to lie face up on a massage table, where a sheet or blanket will be placed across your body. The practitioner will place their hands on the various chakras and associated head or body points to allow your body to draw the energy it requires. The practitioner will lift their hands slightly off your body when working on the breast and genital areas, however, if you are uncomfortable with the idea of a practitioner touching you at all, you only need to advise them of this and they will be able to accommodate your wishes. Reiki does not require the physical connection of hands on body in order to flow into the body.

Approximately ¾ of the way through the treatment the practitioner may require that you turn over. If your physical condition is such to make this impossible, or uncomfortable, or if you simply wish to remain on your back, advise the practitioner and they will be able to make any necessary adjustments to the treatment.

A Reiki treatment is all about YOUR comfort, relaxation and healing.

How often do I need a treatment?

That is purely up to you. You will know when you need another treatment as you will begin to feel as though the effects of the “tablet” have worn off. It is recommended, however, that you have a minimum of 4 treatments initially to give your body a chance to actually heal itself, instead of receiving temporary relief.

Some people will find they will need a treatment on a weekly basis for several months before noticing that “somewhere along the line” they began to feel greatly improved. Others will find that one treatment will be all they ever need. It is purely an individual experience.

Are all treatments the same?

No two treatments are the same, even if performed by the same Practitioner, on the same recipient, for the same injury. The reason for this is your individual needs are never the same from treatment to treatment and always Reiki responds to your needs in the present moment.

Additional information about Reiki

The beauty of Reiki is that anyone can learn and be able to give themselves the ongoing benefit of a Reiki treatment whenever they feel they need it.

As you learn more about Reiki and its capabilities, you may find that there are many other applications you can use it for in your life.

Reiki cannot be self-taught, however. There is a lot of mis-information about Reiki and how people can obtain it by reading a book or following a list of steps on the Internet. Reiki is a modality that can only be experienced and as such, it requires an attunement from a qualified and properly attuned Reiki Master in order to “have” Reiki.

Reiki is a holistic form of healing and as such, does contain a spiritual component, HOWEVER, Reiki is NOT a religion, nor is it any form of cult. One does not need to believe in a higher power, or that they have a soul, in order to benefit from receiving a treatment or learning how to practice Reiki.

Because Reiki is the source energy that is the building block of everything in the universe, it is a stand alone, holistic form of healing. Yet when used in conjunction with other healing or medical practices, Reiki is a complementary form of healing. It has no contraindications. It cannot and does not interfere with any other form of treatment or medication. In fact, Reiki works to enhance and support other forms of healing, including conventional medicine. It is safe to under any circumstances.

Reiki is not a form of massage, nor is it necessary to remove all articles of clothing in order to receive a treatment.

The Australian Reiki Connection is an association that exists for Reiki Masters and Practitioners much the same as the Australian Medical Association (AMA) exists for medical Doctors and Specialists. It advocates on behalf of Masters and Practitioners in order to gain mainstream acceptance and in an attempt to have Reiki included on the list of alternate therapies covered by medical benefits schemes. Its main role, however, is to determine a set of teaching and practicing standards applicable for Reiki and to ensure that its members are suitably qualified and covered for insurance to be able to practice or teach. If you were to have a complaint about a practitioner, it is the appropriate regulatory body to which that complaint should be made. Its website contains a list of recognised Master/Teachers and Practitioners available throughout Australia.

About Michele Orman – Reiki Master/Teacher

I stumbled into Reiki initially in 2004 when my life was leading up to a major crisis point that would bring me to a full and complete stop, forcing me to take stock of my life to that point and change direction.

I had never heard of it before seeing a course advertised in the local adult eduction centre. To this day, I have no real idea why I decided to sign up to attend the workshop and blindly receive an attunement to the first level of Reiki, but that is what I did and I have never regretted that decision.

Little was done with the Reiki (other than self-treat) until late in 2006, when I began to think it was time to complete my training and practice as a therapist. Within a matter of weeks, I was contacted by my original Reiki Master, Dorothy White, Founder of the Academy of Reiki, to say she was travelling to the area to conduct further workshops.

Over the next few months I travelled the North West and Mid North Coast of NSW, following Dorothy and attending all of the workshops necessary to become a Master/Teacher myself. This was achieved in May 2007.

At the time of completing my training I couldn’t really envisage myself working as a teacher and indeed, it took me approximately another 12 months before I gained the courage to take that next step. I’m glad I did, because in doing so, I discovered a passion I never knew I had.

I initially worked as a professional associate of The Academy of Reiki, adhering to its practice and teaching standards. I ceased being a professional associate only when the programme was discontinued by the Academy.

Since that time I have continued to practice and teach according to the Academy’s standards. When teaching Reiki, I still use textbooks supplied by The Academy of Reiki, which were written by its founder and well respected Reiki Master, Dorothy White.

In addition, I am a professional member of the Australian Reiki Connection, Master/Teacher level and as such, adhere to its code of conduct when carrying out treatments and/or conducting workshops.

I absolutely love to teach Reiki and I do so at any given opportunity. For me, one of the greatest things about Reiki is how easily it can be taught to another and how they are then able to take care of their own self-treatment needs.

I find, however, that the majority of people who wish to learn Reiki, choose to do so to enable them to care for a loved one with a specific health condition.

Although, I still practice Reiki for those who do not wish to learn, appointments are limited and I recommend you call to book in advance, or you may miss out.
