HYPNOSIS & HYPNOTHERAPY - Some FAQs
1. What is Hypnosis?
a. I think that the best definition that I have heard so far is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. What this means is that, when induced into a hypnotic trance, you are not asleep. You are aware of what is happening and what is being said but you are very relaxed and the subconscious mind is open and receptive to positive and safe suggestions.
2. What is Hypnotherapy?
a. Hypnotherapy is exactly what the name suggests – therapy while under hypnosis. Therapeutic suggestions are given to the subconscious mind after hypnosis has been induced. Unlike many other forms of therapy, there is no requirement to go into what ‘caused’ the issue that is being addressed – the subconscious mind knows what the cause is and during hypnotherapy any emotional attachment resulting from that cause is reframed and/or reshaped. Consequently, hypnotherapy tends to be less invasive.
3. Are there any side-effects to hypnosis or hypnotherapy?
a. There is only one known side-effect and that is a feeling of total relaxation – not a bad thing. There is no evidence that hypnosis has caused any negative effects in people though it is advisable that, if a person has a mental issue, they first discuss hypnotherapy with their treating physician. In fact, I would insist that the treating physician be consulted before I would suggest or offer treatment.
4. I had a friend who tried to stop smoking using hypnosis – it didn’t work. Why not?
a. There could be many answers to this question but in my experience the most common answers tend to be around the type of hypnotherapy undertaken, the number of sessions and the commitment by the subject. In the majority of cases, more than one session is required to ‘cement’ the changes into the subconscious mind – for something as insidious as smoking, three sessions are recommended. Also, I have found that some people practicing hypnosis and hypnotherapy do not focus on hypnotic trance induction and I think that these people probably have a lower level of success. Finally, there has to be a willingness to make a change on the part of the subject. If a person comes to me seeking stop smoking treatment and admit that they are doing it because their partner (or anyone else) is nagging them – then that does not indicate the best possible circumstances to beat the habit because the chances of success are significantly lessened. If however the person is committed and eager to make a change then hypnotherapy can make it easier, simpler and craving/withdrawal symptom free.
5. I’ve seen stage hypnotists make people do some silly things. Will I give up control when hypnotised?
a. No! – absolutely not! When in hypnotherapy you will experience total relaxation but you will be in control at all times. In fact, the majority of people report wondering to themselves whether or not they really are hypnotised. Don’t worry about that – I know the signs that a person is hypnotised and receptive to making permanent changes. You will note though that, after your first session, you would have been capable of opening your eyes and standing up at any time that you wanted – you just won’t want to because it is such a wonderful place to be.
The other thing to keep in mind is that Stage Hypnotists are putting on a show (and they are very good at it). You would have noticed at the start of the show the hypnotist conducted some tests with people and would have sent some back and left others on stage. The Hypnotist is identifying those people who will quickly go into the level of trance needed to perform and identifying those people who are natural extroverts and will perform. This is not the same as in hypnotherapy. The stage hypnotist is seeking people who fill a certain profile - they need to be people who go into trance very quickly AND who are naturally outgoing individuals. Everyone who is sent back to the audience from a stage show could be hypnotised - but (for the most part) they require a slower and more detailed induction than the stage hypnotist has time for.
6. Can you get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis?
a. No! – it is physically and mentally impossible to get stuck in hypnosis. If a very deep level of trance was induced and then the hypnotist walked out of the room and left the person in hypnosis, then the subject would eventually just open their eyes, get up and leave. You cannot be left in hypnosis, stuck in hypnosis or otherwise.
7. What can hypnotherapy be used for?
a. Stop smoking and weight loss are two very common uses for hypnotherapy and people report great success with these. There are however many, many applications for hypnotherapy in fact, when you consider that a deep sense of relaxation is a certainty, there is nothing that cannot benefit from treatment because just being very relaxed can only help any ailment. There is a consolidated list of applications but if in doubt or you have any questions please feel free to email or phone me.
While hypnotherapy can be used to assist in the treatment of medical and mental health issues, it is important to note that irrespective of how good a subject feels in the hours and days after hypnotherapy, they should maintain any medication regime and not stop or modify their presecriptions before speaking with the prescribing physician. This is an absolute condition of treatment! It is strongly recommended that, if you have a current medical or mental health issue, you discuss hypnotherapy with your Doctor before your first appointment. In these cases, hypnotherapy should be seen as an allied health treatment - not an alternative.
8. What does hypnotherapy cost?
a. Prices vary considerably from practitioner to practitioner and for different types of treatment. A standard consultation costs $200 per session however I do offer a ‘Stop Smoking’ set-fee which is inclusive of three sessions and this is currently set at $500 – which equates to approximately 9 packs of cigarettes per session and represents an all-up saving of $100 over the standard fee schedule!
From time to time, group stop smoking sessions are conducted. These have proved to be very useful and are cheaper than the one-to-one session. For more information see the section further down on this page.
9. What is the counselling part of your business?
a. My wife (Lonai) is a Social Worker and professional student and family counsellor working in the education system. She is also a qualified hypnotherapist as well. Lonai concentrates specifically on women’s issues and children.
10. What should I expect from my hypnotherapy session?
a. In the first session and after completing a consultation form, we will spend some time discussing the issue, what you wish to achieve, what hypnosis is, how it works and what you can expect to experience. The aim of this is to best prepare both you and me to achieve the best possible results. After that, I will then induce the trance and begin the hypnotherapy session. All in all, you should allow up to 1˝ hours for this first session. Subsequent sessions tend to be shorter (about 30 - 45 minutes).
11. I’d like to learn hypnosis – where should I go?
a. It is a lot of fun to learn hypnosis and I would encourage you to consider it. Visit Mind Motivations This links to the Australian Academy of Hypnosis and they provide very good, well respected training. Interestingly, this training has a very practical, 'hands-on' focus and students completing the training understand the theory and the practical aspects of hypnosis, trance induction and maintenance of depth. If you do this course, you will definitely know how to induce and maintain a very good level of trance.
Group QUIT SMOKING Sessions
From time to time, group quit smoking sessions are conducted. These consist of three sessions and have proved to be very effective for people wishing to quit smoking. The cost to attend (inclusive of three sessions) is $420 per person and this represents a saving of $80 over the one-on-one quit smoking special price and $180 over individual session costs. Sessions are 1˝ hours for the first session and one hour for subsequent sessions. Please email or phone to register your interest for one of these group sessions. Group quit smoking sessions will be conducted once sufficient numbers are registered.
Online Hypnotherapy Treatments
Using Skype/Apple Facetime
It is not only possible, but also quite feasible, to conduct hypnotherapy online and using a video/audio exchange facility such as Skype or Apple's Facetime. The client will require:
1. A computer with video capability (webcam)
2. An internet connection (preferably a broadband connection)
3. A Skype account (or an Apple Facetime account)
4. A quite location
The process involved is:
- After arranging a session and a time by telephone/email, a form will be sent for completion. This form is sent online and can be completed and returned by email.
- Using either a PayPal account or postal services for a cheque payment - session payment is made and must be received prior to the conduct of the session. (Note - payment constitutes standard fee + 5% administration/handling costs)
- At the agreed time, I establish contact online.
- Normal session conduct.
It is possible that, from time to time, technology fails and there is a drop-out of connection. It is important to note that it is IMPOSSIBLE to get 'stuck' in hypnosis. If a drop out occurs and there is no prior instruction issued, then the hypnotised individual will probably sit in a relaxed state for a few minutes and then just simply come back to full and normal alertness. However, to address any concern and immediately after hypnosis has been induced, I issue an instruction which stipulates that, if nothing is heard for a period of time (usually 2 minutes) then the subconscious mind will bring the person back to full alertness.
Corporate/Group Facilitation Services
Many career specialties can benefit from hypnotherapy. Besides the individual benefits attached with deep relaxation and stress relief, personal and group focus can be enhanced and developed. Confidence, especially in high-pressure sales related activities can be greatly improved and this undoubtedly leads to far better salesmanship.
Career streams such as Real Estate, Marketing, Advertising, Car Sales and Finance and Brokerage and Senior Level Management positions can all benefit greatly from a focussed, facilitated group session incorporating hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
Michael is a very experienced facilitator and group discussion leader. He has led group discussions and facilitated focus meetings and sessions for large multinational companies, government departments, universities and political organisations.
By coupling hypnosis aspects into a facilitator lead discussion session, greater outcomes, a more defined understanding and better results are achieved. This does not mean that a stage show is conducted. Rather a focussed group session and individual assistance sessions are offered to obtain and maintain focus and ensure that messages and the aim of the session are understood, agreed and accepted by all.
Corporate support work to assist employees in modifying behaviour (such as quitting smoking group sessions) is also an effective method. This is an excellent way for organisations to demonstrate support for employees and for all to obtain a healthy life improvement outcome.
Please contact Michael direct through the Contacts listed on this website to discuss this further.
