What is Clinical Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is derived from the Greek root "myo" meaning muscle. It is a form of manual medicine focusing on the diagnosis, treatment and management of musculoskeletal pain & dysfunction.
Soft tissues, joints & ligaments can be damaged or irritated in accidents, sporting activities, by using incorrect posture, from over-use (repetitive activities) or under-use, disease, or by physical and emotional stress. Myotherapy aims to restore maximum mobility to these areas by correcting and rehabilitating the injury and preventing re-occurrence.

Diagnosis is achieved through assessment of active & passive movements, neurological examination and orthopedic tests. Myotherapy offers a holistic approach is taken to patient care, not only treating the symptoms, but also the underlying cause of pain and dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system. The treatment can be preventative, corrective or rehabilitative.

Clinical Myotherapy offers an individualized, personal session which aims at treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal irregularities. The treatment will provide specialist muscle therapy in order to relieve pain, improve mobility and restore muscle function.

What does a Myotherapy consultation generally involve?

During the initial consultation the Myotherapiest will focus on collecting information from the patient regarding their general health and the presenting condition. This will enable the Myotherapist to obtain information about what factors could be causing the dysfunction, enabling the treatment of the cause not only the symptoms. A thorough examination of the patient including postural, neural, range of motion, functional and orthopedic testing and conduct an extensive palpatory evaluation will be conducted.

Only after this assessment is complete, can any form of physical diagnosis take place and meaningful treatment can be completed. The inital treatments will take an hour due to the time gathering information, where else subsequent treatments will last approximately 45mins. Treatment may include the use of a number of modalities ranging from soft tissue and joint mobilisation which may be augmented with the use of dry-needling, electro-stimulation, thermal therapy, pain management techniques and prescriptive exercises to be carried out by the patient.
