About Us
Penny Latey runs one of the foremost Pilates Studios on the North Shore of Sydney. As a dancer, Penny discovered Pilates in London in 1979 during treatment for an injury. She subsequently trained with Alan Herdman & Andreas Reyneke and also completed courses in Anatomy, Physiology and Massage. Penny has modified the approach to Pilates that would benefit everybody, not just dancers. On return to Australia, Penny and Colleagues set up the first independent association of Pilates, The Australian Pilates Method Association, of which she was the Inaugural President from 1996 – 1999.
Penny developed the first formal Pilates Instructor Course in Australia. This course was then introduced at the University of Technology (UTS) in Sydney, where she taught the Graduate Certificate in the Pilates Method from 2000 - 2005. During that time, she introduced improved assessment procedures, clinical practice programmes and musculoskeletal retraining to safely address a range of problems. In the last three years, Penny’s post graduate research has focused on Pilates for Older Adults to maintain upright posture and improve dysfunctional feet.
At the Modern Pilates Studio, the Pilates Method is modified for physical retraining of the body applied to the rehabilitation of complex musculoskeletal problems. We advocate Pilates for both fitness and the dancer, or the athlete as well as pre operative preparation particularly for clients who have been recommended joint replacement and general rehabilitation. Clients include many who have had multiple accidents or second joint replacement and other musculoskeletal injuries. Without exception, clients who undertake pre-operative preparation feel better post operatively and are able to move more freely and recover sooner, sleep better and return to normal function movement faster with a reduced level of pain.
The Modern Pilates studio offers one on one private assessments (and ongoing privates for complex problems), semi private sessions and ongoing tailored programs to address specialised problems and pain management. We happily liaise with primary health care professionals e.g. Specialist Doctors, General Practitioners, Physiotherapists and Chiropractors to ensure your continuity of care. The studio classes are small, fun and friendly, and focus on your individual needs, being supervised constantly by qualified instructors.
We offer unique graded, small group Mat classes with a maximum of 10 clients, from Basic to Advanced. These are held for those without major musculoskeletal problems, including specialised classes for both seniors and teenagers.
Our website is currently being upgraded and under renovation. In the meantime please contact the studio directly or via email.
