Brenda Wallace
BN Grad Dip MHN.Certificate in Initiatic Art Therapy
Guided Imagery & Music Therapist
As a Psychotherapist and Counsellor I aim to facilitate personal growth and promote healing, working at the client’s own pace using my skills to fit individual needs.
I have been a registered health professional for 40 years, working most recently in mental health where much of my experience has been in postnatal distress, depression, anxiety and childhood trauma.
I am trained in Art Therapy skills and use Mandala drawing in my work, either on its own, as a tool in meditation Mindfulness and stress management, or in conjunction with the Bonny method of Guided Imagery & Music (GIM).
GIM is a music-based psychotherapy that uses relaxation techniques and counselling skills during a 35-45 minute program of classical music that provides a supportive soundtrack for the client’s experience. GIM is a well-researched process that enables a journey of self-discovery connecting the client with their inner wisdom. GIM uses Jungian and Transpersonal theory. I also incorporate elements of Narrative Therapy and Attachment Theory in my work with clients.
I have completed a 3 year Post Graduate Diploma in GIM at the University of Melbourne and I am a member of the Music & Imagery Association of Australia.
GIM is beneficial for a wide range of life issues including:- Issues related to childhood abuse and trauma
- Mother-infant attachment
- Depression and anxiety
- Grief, loss and relationship issues
- Chronic fatigue
- Eating disorders and addictions
- Living with chronic and/or life threatening illness
- Work related stress
- Managing change
- Emotional and creative blocks
I work with clients to provide a plan of care that best suits their needs. Consultations are available for 60 or 90 minutes at Aldinga Beach and Cumberland Park Sth Aust.
What Happens During a Session?
Guided Imagery and Music is a specialised field of Music Therapy. Counselling is an integral part of the process. During a GIM session clients experience relaxation while programmed music provides a soundtrack.
A program of classical music is chosen that best fits the client's mood and issue on the day. The music provides a sense of safety and security and stimulates the imagination, helping clients to explore their inner world.
The GIM therapist assists the client during the listening process by continuing a supportive dialogue and monitoring the client's mood. A GIM session is relaxing and non-confrontational. The therapist is guided by the client's wishes at all times and allows the client to work at his/her own pace.
When the music has finished some clients like to draw or write to clarify important aspects of their GIM experience.
GIM sessions can be shortened to suit individual needs. Clients may choose to remain seated and explore their problems while drawing or writing to a shorter piece of music.
GIM is suitable for groups of people with a common need such as Bereavement, Cancer, Addictions, Chronic Illness and Carers.
