SERVICES Practitioner Profile
Mylene was first trained in Swedish Kinetic Massage in her homeland of Canada. Upon arriving in Australia in 2005, she furthered her studies by attending the Australasian College of Natural Therapies to attain a diploma in Remedial Massage Therapy. Since then she has worked alongside Chiropractors as an assistant to postural assessment, has developed an understanding of structural problems and has enhanced her knowledge base of soft tissue correction. This has enabled her to treat with a keen eye for detail. Mylene provides the perfect blend of a holistic approach with a practical application that targets anatomy and mechanical functions of the body.
Technique’s Used
Myofascial Release
Myofascial release is a manual technique used to stretch and realign fascia – the connective tissue in the body – by means of applying direct and slow moving pressure in a way that allows the body to correct itself. This technique is excellent for improving posture, especially in the upper back region.
Trigger Point Therapy
Active trigger points refer pain to the body. They are described as hyperirritable points in muscles that are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers. They are released by sustained and direct pressure applied to the specific areas around the body, and alleviate pain and induce muscle relaxation.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage involves the manual application of 'effleurage' and 'petrissage' to relax the soft tissue throughout the body, and is a necessary application in providing comfort prior to the application of more specific work. It also increases blood flow to tissue, moves lymph and sets off endorphins in the body for a general sense of relaxation.
Reflexology
Reflexology is an ancient technique. Its philosophy is that your feet and hands mirror the rest of your body. The application of pressure to specific points on the feet and hands can have a beneficial impact on the associated or corresponding organ or soft tissue within a compartment. Reflexology aims to maintain balance and harmony in the body, and can bring a great sense of relief to symptoms of back, hip and neck discomfort and can help relieve certain headaches.
Passive Stretching
Passive stretching is a technique which places the client in a position of stretch with as little muscle activity as possible. This allows for muscles to reach a greater degree of flexibility and is a good assistance to clients who find it difficult to stretch on their own. This is an excellent technique for those whom require assistance in achieving greater flexibility and mobility.
Joint Mobilization
Joint mobilization is similar to passive stretching in that the client is required to relax the muscle completely to allow for inactive muscle manipulation. This technique aims to create an increase in synovial fluid within the joint, and reduces restriction from adhesive capsules. It is an excellent technique to decrease stiffness by enhancing joint function.
Muscle Energy Technique
MET is an effective technique used to relax muscles from spasm, and in turn increases the range of motion. Within the application, the client is asked to resist against an applied pressure in a stretch position. The muscle’s proprioceptors are tricked by the technique and respond by relaxing.
