Bowen Therapy

I have been an advanced Bowen Therapist since 1997. This gentle technique can have amazing results. The bowen technique gives people with pain and dysfunction an opportunity to receive a pain free treatment. Bowen consists of small rolling movements performed in very specific points on the body and there are frequent but important pauses between procedures giving the body time to benefit from each set. Bowen is a non-invasive technique. It is gentle and safe to use on anyone from babies to the elderly or immobile. There is no manipulation and no discomfort or pain when receiving the treatment. Bowen corrects imbalance within the body, relaxes muscles, and increases blood supply and lymphatic drainage. With better circulation there is better assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins. This aids in the body’s natural recovery allowing for freer movement, better posture and reduction in pain and dis-ease.

Bowen works on the whole body and therefore there is a wide range of conditions that can benefit. In fact in the case of acute injuries most conventional manual therapies are contraindicated for at least two days after injury where with bowen the quicker you receive a treatment the greater the benefit. Bowen is completely pain free and it is an excellent alternative to some more traditional uncomfortable methods of treatment.

One of the greatest advantages to Bowen is that a result and or improvement should be experienced by after the third treatment, in my experience if this does not occur, Bowen is not for you. It is rare to be able to try a new therapy with such a definitive result time frame.

Some of the many conditions that Bowen can benefit are:
Back pain, repetitive strain injuries, neck and jaw problems, joint restrictions, respiratory problems, headaches, bed wetting in children, low energy levels, menstrual problems including PMT and acute and chronic injuries.

Craniosacral Therapy

Fundamentally craniosacral therapy (CST) helps remove stress and trauma from the body. This could be physical trauma, like a car accident, a fall, repetitive strain, or a difficult birth. Trauma can also be chemical, viral and emotional, like deep shock, depression, lifetime emotional issues or witnessing violence. Trauma leaves an imprint on the body, which over time, be that short or long, can cause dysfunction and or pain.

Unlike the name suggests CST is not just about working on the head, in fact it is an entire body therapy. There are two aspects to the process of the treatment. The first is to locate the restriction or imbalance, which may be causing a problem. The second is to encourage the restriction to release. This is achieved through highly developed palpation skills and an intuitive ability to support the body. The treatment is conducted whilst the client is fully clothed and the therapist works on the different areas of the body in a non-invasive way, very gently feeling the rhythm of the body that is created by the craniosacral system. Rather than pushing or manipulating the body into a set or ‘correct’ position, the therapist uses techniques to assist the body to release its own restrictions.

The craniosacral system envelops the central nervous system, which controls every function of the body. This system consists of the membranes and fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, the bones of the face and cranium down to the sacrum and tailbone. Externally from this system is the connective tissue of the body which ultimately connects all tissue, bone and viscera (organs) together and to the craniosacral system. The reciprocal nature of the system means that restriction in one part of the system can cause pain and or dysfunction anywhere in the body, not just at the restriction. There can be many underlying issues occurring in the body that may be silent, but can be resulting in that problem which is screaming at you for attention. What this means is that an ankle injury 10 yrs ago could be pulling the tissue through to your hip which in turn puts tension onto the sacrum and bowel encouraging constipation and headaches. Others have only worked on your neck to try and relieve the headaches, the reason you sort treatment and achieved only temporary relief. CST supports the discovery of those underlying issues so as to support the release more permanently.

Somatoemational Release
This is truely where my passion lies.

Somatoemotional Release (SER) is a process that can occur within a Craniosacral session to help rid the mind and body of the residual effects of trauma which may manifest emotionally, behaviorally physically or even psychologically.

Joint research conducted by Dr John Upledger (founder of CST) and biophysicist Dr Zvi Kami in the late 70’s led to the discovery that the body often retains the imprint of the physical forces from accidents, injuries and emotional shock. Those dysfunctional areas are frequently isolated in what Dr Upledger calls ‘energy cysts’, essentially where we hold onto the trauma or ‘our stuff’. Although often a healthy body can adapt to energy cysts, the body has to then accommodate for housing this energy which results in the body having to work differently or it needs more energy to work or function. Over time, as short as moments as long as years, the adaptations start to become less effective, they tire, fatigue. Pain, symptoms, dysfunctions even behaviours begin to appear and become increasingly difficult to suppress or ignore. This is not only true for emotional or psychological trauma we have experienced in our lives but also when physical injuries nag or don’t completely heal it may be because there is emotion from the experience trapped within the tissue. This trauma restricts the body’s natural ability to recover or heal. This gives explanation why some injuries just don’t seem to get better no matter how much treatment you receive.

Intuitive methods and monitoring of the craniosacral rhythm are use to detect and facilitate the release of energy cysts. The therapist’s ability to support the body is governed by the individual on the table. This means what happens in the session is determined by what the ‘body’ is needing rather than the therapist dictating what they ‘think’ is needed, NOTHING CAN BE FORCED TO HAPPEN. There are many ways in which an SER can occur. As this work connects to higher levels of consciousness the method in which a person releases the trauma is determined by the individuals internal intelligence, supporting the individual with dialogue through a conscious process is only one, but there are some traumas which are simply still too traumatic for the person to re-experience or remember. This work gives the individual the opportunity to release in many non confronting ways without needing to know the story. It can be easy! In my opinion this is one of the gifts of this work. So much of this work gives the individual the opportunity to ‘let go’ of their trauma or ‘stuff’ in a way that is safe for them, in most cases this is done unconsciously. In the times more awareness is needed I ensure support in the process with the maximum possible amount of privacy regarding the event or situation as well as it’s resolution or healing. Because of how I work I often need very little information or detail when supporting the individual, giving them more freedom to achieve the release and experience change. Avenues or ways that the body releases can occur not only in the session but also after. During the initial consultation I discuss in length different experiences that may be possible as well as ways to improve your awareness of them and how to support yourself during it. This is not counseling, but a way of listening to the body and allowing it to identify areas or issues which it deems significant and its consequence may be physical, emotional or behavioral.

There is an extremely diverse range of problems CST can support and treat. Some examples of these but definitely not limited to are;
Head injuries, issues resulting from birth, all forms of muscular skeletal pain, anxiety, migraines, whiplash injuries, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, menstruation issues, respiratory and digestive issues, high blood pressure, and acute and chronic injuries

Craniosacral Therapy for Children

Childbirth is a journey, which is both complex and at times challenging for a child. During this process and in utero a child may develop restrictions within their body due to positioning, viruses or illness, the mothers experience during the pregnancy or birth trauma. Sometimes they may not be able to completely recover or release the affects of these experiences without assistance. CST is a gentle form of therapy which can offer comfort and relief. Offering CST to a child not only gives them an opportunity to heal and be more comfortable but also empowers the parent/s. There is something you can do.

Research suggests that the birth process can be responsible for many dysfunctions and central nervous system problems. CST carried out at an early age in life could potentially reduce a wide variety of difficulties, many of which may not become apparent until your child is at school. Birth is not the only potential trauma children may experience, emotional issues in the home, social issues at school, falls and illnesses can all have an impact on children which may result in either physical behavioural or emotional responses. CST is a very gentle form of therapy, which offers possible solutions and when correctly applied, is risk free. So no matter how old your child is it is never too late to benefit from this therapy.

There are many conditions which may be avoided or improved with CST, such as;
Colic reflux, hearing problems, motor problems, cross eyed, dyslexia, sleeping difficulties, bed wetting, overriding sutures, separation issues, behavioural issues, and many more.

Pregnancy and Birth

It’s not just our children whom can benefit from CST. It is also an excellent therapy for mothers for whom pregnancy and childbirth can be very different to what they imagined and both physically and emotionally stressful. Emotional strains of relationships, the situation surrounding conception, physical problems during the pregnancy or even the even the expectation of the birth, often puts high levels of stress on the mother. Add on top of that a ‘difficult’ labor’ or birth,
a woman can be left with many physical issues and emotional restrictions which may result in post natal depression. CST can assist to release the trauma associated with these experiences and help women restore balance. Ultimately this may allow them to cope with the pressures of motherhood or even welcome the idea of doing it all again.

Recorded Sound, Distant Healing Sessions

The growth and development of myself personally and in my craniosacral work lead to the uncovering of a deeper connection to my own truth and my connection to what surrounds us and what is within me. As a result I use the sound of voice if it is called on in my craniosacral sessions. These sounds include a large range of tones and the channeling of many languages. The effect is powerful as the sounds lift the lower vibrations or energies, including trauma and also appear to give the physical tissue direction to change or release on a cellular level without the interference of consciousness or ego. This interference could potentially limit or inhibit the release or awareness.

I have taken the sound aspect of my work and used it in addition to the use of a traditional frame drum to make available recorded sound, distant healing sessions. This is ideal for those unable to receive one on one or group work, whether that be due to immobility or location.

I am able to connect to the individual through visualizing them, seeing them as if I was treating them. For that to be possible all that is need is a recent photo and a couple of small details. Once connected to their energy whatever sound is needed to support their process of change is created through the use of the drum or my voice. This is all recorded onto CD, it is then mailed to you for you to listen to in your own space just as if you were receiving the session in your own home. This process is a very powerful one. The time you actually listen to the recording is exactly the time you are meant to receive it. Physical, emotional even spiritual experiences can occur when you receive your session, and may continue over a period of time. Your process is as individual as you are. At the very least you will have a personal meditation CD. Also what is important is that you may listen to your recording more than once, on each occasion you will receive something that you need at that time until you no longer ‘need’ to listen and or maybe feel you need another session.

This work can not only help in the support of trauma and the physical, behavioral or emotional responses in the body but also potentially support you in your spiritual journey.

ABOUT ME

I originally began my practice as a remedial massage therapist in 1994 after the completion of my Diploma of Health Science- Nursing. I added Bowen therapy to my practice in early 1997 which exposed me to working more with the natural healing ability of the body and in turn broadened the types of issues I could support in addition to musculoskeletal. I was exposed to Craniosacral Therapy after the birth of my son. My pregnancy was filled with emotional stress and trauma. The delivery that followed was reflective of that being a long and difficult induced labor and ending in an emergency caesarean. My son was affected by that experience both physically and behaviorally. I knew that he needed support, and so did I. So at the tender age of 2 weeks, my son received his first treatment of Craniosacral therapy. The changes were profound, and as I observed this amazing therapy I knew this was my calling. It was a few yrs later I began the work, and it was also the beginning of incredible healing and spiritual evolution of myself, for not only did I learn the work but I actively began to get work done on myself. Within a couple of years from learning my first CST level I had transformed my practice to be dominated by CST and Bowen. I have a special love of working with children and have had additional training for that but all people are supported with this work. The main intension of my work is SER, I believe that our bodies act in service of our spirit, so to become conscious of a behavior, belief which does not reflect our true selves and what is needed to honor us, and as a tool to communicate that, our body screams. Yes there is physical injury, but the ability for our body to recover from that is greatly influenced by our emotional health. OUR BIOGRAPHY CREATES OR BIOLOGY. CST supports the change of this down to a cellular level. This work has been a catalyst for my own physical and emotional healing and spiritual growth creating a unique style and level of support. In addition to one on one work my own growth has facilitated an extention of CST in the form of group work conducted in nature and recorded sound, distant healing sessions. What I have learn't and love about this work is that it re connects us to our own truth and the knowing that the ability to heal and grow comes from within and our connection to all.
