My name is Justine Watt and I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Herbalist who has been helping people take positive steps to improve their health and wellbeing since 2005. I first became interested in holistic therapies as a teenager. I was regularly unwell and felt I was constantly taking courses of antibiotics. This only masked the symptoms and my body eventually became immune to the antibiotics. After seeing a Naturopath and taking herbal medicine, vitamins and minerals I never suffered from the same illnesses again! I have always strived to live a healthy lifestyle, and especially now being a mother to twins, I feel even more passionate about healthy living.

I also became interested in the power of the mind and the amazing benefits of relaxation and meditation. Having the ability to heal your mind and live a healthy lifestyle is the best gift you could ever give yourself.

I have a Diploma of Botanical Medicine, Diploma of Clinical Hypnotherapy and Certificate of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

I am a clinical member of the National Herbalists Association of Australia (NHAA) and the Australian Hypnotherapists’ Association (AHA) and I am registered with the National Hypnotherapists Register of Australia (NHRA).

My clinic room is located in Gymea in the Sutherland Shire.

Eftpos facilities are available.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is an exciting and positive way to help you improve your life!

While you only have one mind, it is best understood as being divided up into the following:
  • Conscious Mind (outer consciousness): The part of your mind that is responsible for short term memory, logic, reasoning and voluntary movement. The conscious part of our mind only uses 10% of our mind capacity, whereas our subconscious uses 90%.
  • Subconscious Mind (inner consciousness): The part of our mind which is responsible for involuntary actions and regulates our physical body – respiration, adjusting hormone levels, digestion, heart beat etc. The subconscious mind also stores our memories, thoughts and behaviours.

When learning something for the first time, like driving, our conscious mind absorbs the new information and, once we have practiced driving over a period of time, it then becomes a function of our subconscious mind.

Habits are formed in the same way, like smoking. People will usually begin smoking with a conscious decision – peer pressure, stress etc. Once they have been smoking repetitively over time, they then continue with the habit on autopilot.

When people make a decision to change, it can be very difficult to achieve as our subconscious mind controls our behaviour. For example, you consciously know that smoking is an expensive habit and bad for your health, but if the subconscious has its own reasons for wanting to carry on smoking, the subconscious part of our mind will usually win.

So, how do you access the subconscious mind to create lasting change? This is where hypnosis and hypnotherapy can help.

Hypnotherapists use the state of hypnosis to facilitate communication between the conscious and subconscious minds. The conscious (analytical) mind enjoys a break, while your subconscious mind is open and receptive to positive commands and suggestions.

So what is hypnosis exactly? It is an altered state of awareness where you feel completely relaxed mentally, physically and emotionally. Hypnosis is a very natural state which you experience many times throughout the day. It is similar to reading a good book, watching a movie or daydreaming - you experience deep relaxation, while your mind is still alert to your physical sensations and surroundings.

One of the many benefits of hypnotherapy is learning simple and effective self-hypnosis techniques from your hypnotherapist. Once you master these techniques and put them into practice, you will then be able to give yourself suggestions and develop skills of being more relaxed in stressful or difficult situations.
Hypnotherapy sessions are conducted in a confidential and relaxing environment. The sessions usually take one hour, however, please allow extra time for your first session.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine has been used for centuries and is widely used throughout the world. There is archaeological evidence to show that prehistoric man used plants for healing.

More and more people are wanting to take control of their health and wellbeing and are turning away from orthodox forms of medicine towards natural alternatives.

Unlike some of the more mainstream medications, herbalists use herbal medicine preparations to treat the whole person and not just the symptoms. Herbalists aim to help reduce the incidence or recurrence of the symptoms and improve the body’s own natural healing ability.

Herbal medicine is becoming more recognised and validated by scientific investigations. Many commonly used drugs today have been based on or derived from the chemicals found in the healing properties of certain plants.
For example, the heart medication, Digoxin, is derived from Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea). Similarly, Aspirin is derived from chemical compounds in White Willow (Salix alba).

Using the healing properties of plants, herbal medicine is effective in treating a range of ailments (both acute and chronic), as well as supporting the immune system and improving overall health. Herbal medicine is holistic - treating the cause of the underlying problem and restoring health.

Below is a list of some of the more well known herbs and their uses:
  • Echinacea preparations (from Echinacea purpurea and other Echinacea species) and Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) can help improve immune function. Echinacea is one of the most popular herbal medicines and has been shown to reduce the incidence and duration of common colds;
  • St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) can help alleviate mild to moderate depression due to its antidepressant action; and
  • Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) can help improve sleep and reduce anxiety due to its mild sedative effects.

Most herbal medicines have fewer side-effects than synthetic pharmaceutical drugs. Patients taking Valerian, for example, may not suffer from morning drowsiness like they would if taking prescription sleeping tablets. Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), used to reduce fever or used as an anti-inflammatory, does not irritate the stomach compared to Aspirin.

While antibiotics and other prescription medications are sometimes necessary, there are other times where an over-prescription of medication can lead to the body’s immune system becoming weakened and the symptoms not clearing up.

On your first consultation with a herbalist, a full case history is taken ensuring that any underlying problems are identified.

A specialised treatment plan is then designed and implemented, with all herbal formulas being prepared according to the specific needs of each client and administered with clear dosage instructions.
It is important when visiting a herbalist to list all of your current prescription medications and other herbal medications (if any) to ensure there are no drug-herb interactions.

Follow-up consultations are available to monitor progress and ensure best results.
