What is Lymphoedema?
If the fluid or vessels become restricted, due to a number of reasons:- Scar tissue build-up
- Debris of dried blood and dead cells from surgery
- Lymph Node removal
- Destroyed vessels from Radiation Therapy
Then the fluid builds up, causing swelling and this is known as Lymphoedema. There is no known cure for this condition only the management strategies which we provide.
Problems Associated with Lymphoedema:- Varicose Veins - because of the pressure placed on the veins by the build up of Lymph.
- Increased Weight as a result of built up fluid. This is commonly mistaken for other fluid and fluid tablets are prescribed. In this circumstance these tablets do not help and should be avoided.
- Skin Cancer - because the outgoing Lymph is septic fluid when it sits around it can cause damage to the soft tissue this provides a weak point in the skin organ and makes you more susceptible to Skin Cancers. Please get a regular check up.
- Cellulitis - this is an infection of the Lymphatic System.
What is Cellulitis?
Stagnant fluid builds up, due to a lack of drainage and starts to damage the soft tissue resulting in reddish coloured, scaly, thinned skin.
Symptoms of Cellulitis include, an area or limb becoming hot, red, swollen, painful or even a fast moving, non-itchy rash, fever or chills. You may get some or all the symptoms.
