Acupuncture
Acupuncture is part of an integrated system of primary health care, known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has an uninterrupted history of development dating back thousands of years in China and East Asia. The origins of Acupuncture can be traced back at least two thousand years, making it one of the oldest and long standing health care systems in the world.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles (single use disposable) into areas of the body known as Acupuncture points. These points lie on meridians or channels as they are also known. There is a direct communication between these meridians and internal organs of the body in TCM theory, central to the theory of TCM is the belief in concept of Qi, best thought of as vital energy that flows through the body in Meridians.
Moxibustion treats and prevents diseases by the application of heat to points of the body. I use moxa sticks which are made from the dried material from Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). This gives pleasant warmth and a very direct heat to points so as to concentrate the effect in a specific area.
Cupping is the use of suction cups used traditionally to draw out heat or cold in a painful area, also cups can give a vertical pull on tight muscular structures that can free up areas of tension allowing free movement of blood and nutrients into the previously overly tight areas.
Guasha is the use of a spoon that is scraped along the skin so as to unlock muscular tension out of area. First we apply some oil on the area and gently scrape along the taut muscular band so as to free up the area and allow nutrient exchange through the areas that have been chronically tight.

Bowen Therapy
Tom Bowen was a Geelong based therapist who originated a unique style of physical therapy that now bears his name. Mr Bowen was treating up to 13,000 people a year in his Geelong clinic for a wide variety of complaints. Bowen Therapy (BT) is characterised by gentle moves that occur on muscle bellies, ligaments and origins and insertions of muscles that cause, through neuromuscular mechanisms, profound relaxation in affected areas. BT not only affects the muscular system but also the nervous system so as to bring about dramatic change in presenting complaints. Bowen therapy is the physical therapy of choice for Parkinson’s disease (Click Here)and also recommended for the following complaints.
- Back pain and sciatica
- Digestive and bowel problems
- Earache and TMJ problems
- Migraines and other forms of headache
- Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
- Hip, knee and foot problems
- Menstrual and hormonal irregularities
- Neck and shoulder problems (including “ frozen shoulder” )
- Groin pain, pelvic tilt and uneven leg length
- Respiratory problems and hay fever
- RSI, carpal tunnel syndromes and tennis elbow
- Bedwetting in children
- Sports and other traumatic injuries
- Delayed onset muscle soreness ( DOMS)
What to expect during Bowen Therapy:
BT moves are quite gentle yet they can affect profound results.
Generally there is no pain with the moves, occasionally areas that are very tight can produce momentary discomfort when they are released, and this discomfort would be no more than a second in duration.
Clients are advised to wear loose comfortable clothing, tracksuit pants and t shirts are perfect, jeans or rather denim is too hard a fabric to do effective work through.
There are rest breaks built into BT and the rationale for these is to give the body a chance to process the work that has proceeded. Some schools of BT advocate that the client be in their underwear and draped for optimum results but in my experience there isn’t that much of a difference, if any, in the clinical outcome between these two approaches. From my point of view client comfort and relaxation come before any rigid adherence to beliefs that have no clinical significance.
Bowen sessions generally last up to an hour and it is usual to have two treatments a week apart and then another session two weeks after the second one. For most problems this is enough, obviously more chronic problems may take a little longer.
I studied BT with Bowtech, I have also completed advanced level work with ISBT and am a member of The Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia.

Remedial Massage
Remedial Massage is a clinical approach to soft tissue (Muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) injury and dysfunction.
After thorough assessment of the presenting condition, including history taking, postural assessment, range of movement tests to assess any joint involvement, muscle testing of affected areas, a treatment plan is devised. Treatment may include deep tissue work, Trigger point therapy (Click Here), cupping, moxibustion and stretch.
My background in massage includes both Western styles and also styles more identified with Asia; Acupressure, Namikoshi Shiatsu, Tui Na and Thai massage. I do not always consciously use only one form, after 20 years experience they blend into one another.
Over the years I have come to the conclusion that long term chronic injury must have as a basis, the use of therapeutic stretching as well as treatment, for successful results. Therapeutic stretching is not enough by itself, and treatment without a stretching prescription falls short in the therapeutic outcome. Think of it this way, we go into the garden on the first day of Spring and lose ourselves in the joy of being able to turn the soil, we may have sore back after this unaccustomed exercise. Generally this is simple to treat, it is not the same as a manual worker who had been doing hard physical work for thirty years and in that time has been using the same muscles to do the same activity with minimal variety of movement. Same muscles every day, same task, no wonder people get stooped or bent into the shape they have by 65.
I am a member of The Australian Association of Massage Therapists and have Workcover accreditation for Remedial Massage and also accreditation for Remedial Massage for most health fund rebates, please check when making your appointment.
