Have you tried therapy and found that your sadness, anxiety, and any other issues are still not put to rest?

Psychoanalysis is a talking therapy that aims to develop a deeper insight into yourself. An analysis is an entirely personal journey that can help you understand and resolve problems that seem to keep repeating, no matter how many other therapies or practices you have tried. There is something that you can do. Psychoanalysis is all about you, and no one else.

I practice psychoanalysis because I believe that we live in a world which has little room for the unique individual subject. We are bombarded and constrained by the ways in which we are "supposed" to exist, leaving us little empathy for our own selves to respond to the world, let alone simply be. I believe psychoanalysis works because it is a safe space to explore who you truly are without the "shoulds" that restrain us; this unique self needs to be allowed to simply be, and to be understood. The unconscious motivations that often drive us to distraction can be spoken about, and fully explored without judgement or guilt. Then you can act and react to the world in an entirely different way, your own way.

This is the difference that an analysis can make.

Take the step and see what psychoanalysis can offer you. Call me for an appointment, or just for a chat to see if psychoanalysis can work for you.

Some FAQs

1) How does simply talking work?

You talk to the analyst. It can be about anything, there is no script, just a safe space for you to say what you need to say. I listen for links, associations, slips of the tongue, to dreams, most of which reveal unconscious motivations that are not readily apparent to you. I guide you along the paths of your own unconscious. Instead of repeating the same behaviours, you have a chance to explore what is behind these behaviours and really think about your own self.

2) Are Freud's ideas still relevant today?

Yes. Now more than ever Freud's theories, concepts and clinical experience can still be identified in clinical practice with today's depressions, anxieties, and a whole range of other mental health issues. In fact, most of what we know of today as human problems stem from Freud's extensive observations and research. Modern life is full of stresses that are hard to understand, and unable to be solved by outdated methods. Psychoanalysis offers a contemporary way of understanding the way your life works and how you can change the infuriating and depressing patterns that seem to keep appearing for you.

3) What is a Lacanian psychoanalysis? Who was Jacques Lacan?

Jacques Lacan was a French psychoanalyst who began a return to Freud's ideas in the early 20th century. Lacan's psychoanalysis is based in the idea that the unconscious is structured like a language, and therefore talking helps understand our motivations

4) I'm already seeing a psychiatrist/counsellor/psychologist/natural healer, and I'm on antidepressants. Why should I see a psychoanalyst?

Psychoanalysis is a drug free approach that examines the reasons why you are on antidepressants, and seeking help from therapists. However, psychoanalysis is not about a regime that might not work for you. If you are currently on antidepressants or other medication, or seeing a psychiatrist, you can also talk to a psychoanalyst. Sometimes medication and psychoanalysis work hand in hand, as psychoanalysis can support whatever other treatment you are currently working with.

5) Is psychoanalysis expensive?

I charge on a sliding scale from a base rate of $90 AUD per hour. I am happy to accept cases of extreme financial need.

6) Does psychoanalysis last a long time?

Not always: you are in a safe space and can confront your unresolved issues, which will take as long as it needs to. Remember that psychoanalysis is a very personal journey; your issues won't vanish in three short sessions.

If you just need a safe space to say something, call for an appointment.
