Freeform Osteopathy
Hi I’m Amy Myhill and welcome to my website. With years of experience as a massage therapist and as an osteopath, I can help ease and manage your pain - to get you feeling better today.
The Osteopathy Experience
Osteopathy originates from the United States. It was founded by a physician named Andrew Taylor Still in 1874.
He later founded the American School of Osteopathy in 1892, where it then became popular in Britain, then Australia and New Zealand. Osteopathy is now a widely recognised primary health care profession for all ages.
How can it help me?
Osteopathy can provide safe, effective relief from:
- back and neck pain
- joint pain
- pain in the arms, legs, hands or feet
- hip pain or sacro-iliac problems
- nerve pain such as sciatica
- headaches, migraine and jaw pain
- rib pain
- period pain
- whiplash
- pre- and post-natal issues and pelvic dysfunction
- organ-related complaints (such as sinus pain, asthma or reflux)
- sporting injuries and pain management
Why choose Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a precise form of manual medicine which –without using drugs or medication – utilises ‘hands-on’ techniques to influence the way the body works. We use biomechanical principles it to consider the links between all the systems in the body and how they affect each other. (For example, foot pain can involve the leg, hip, lower back and even the bowel).
Osteopaths study a full-time double-degree program at university for 5 years to develop these skills in touch and treatment. For over a century osteopaths have treated people the world over. And we are a registered Primary Health Care modality, meaning you won’t need a GP referral to visit.
I've tried Physio and Chiro, what does Osteopathy offer?
Traditional Physiotherapy focuses on rehabilitation of injured tissues using set protocols to treat one or two areas of the body. Exercise, mobilisation and electrotherapies are often used. Traditional Chiropractic diagnosis is usually based on the use of X-rays and treatment is focused solely on spinal manipulation.
By considering the body as a unit, Osteopathy is holistic in nature and uses a broad range of manual techniques. We use joint mobilization, manipulation, exercise, stretching, nutritional advice, soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, strain-counterstrain, functional technique and many more. These are all designed to be gentle and effective so the treatments are often relaxing.
Osteopaths use physical examination to diagnose your symptoms and can also order scans and X-rays or MRI’s if required.
What is involved during my session?
- A detailed medical history will be taken. This involves discussing what medication you are taking or whether you’ve sustained any significant injuries or operations.
- Please bring any imaging such as MRI, CT scans, X-rays or blood test results.
- You may be asked to remove the top layer of clothing for the physical exam. You are then asked to move or bend so the osteopath can check your posture and mobility.
- Treatment follows, with discussion about any findings. Your osteopath will endeavour to make the treatment as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
- Importantly, in order to treat the whole body, some parts which seem unrelated may be treated. For example if you have shoulder pain your back or your wrist may also be treated.
- Follow-up analysis to check on progress, home exercises and preventative strategies are then discussed.
About Amy
Originally from New Zealand, Amy trained in England as a remedial massage therapist before returning home to study osteopathy, and was voted student representative in her final year. She speaks about the benefits of osteopathy to numerous sporting and workplace groups and attends regular post graduate courses relating to specialty fields of osteopathic diagnosis and treatment. Her practice is predominantly structural and visceral osteopathy, using comfortable and effective techniques to get you on the road to recovery.
It is always rewarding to reveal the great benefits that osteopathy provides, and the gentle, effective methods we use to get those results. Amys approach to treatment has been greatly influenced by considering how musculoskeletal pain usually involves a visceral (organ) component. After completing Visceral Osteopathy post-graduate courses she has found great success treating people with joint pain, headaches and organ complaints.
In addition to time with family and friends, Amy enjoys adventure sports, dancing and music. QUALIFICATION DETAILS
