What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a gentle, natural approach to treating the whole body. The osteopath seeks to work with the body’s own inherent self-healing and self-regulating mechanisms in order to restore balance and health to the body. Under ideal conditions these mechanisms are able to keep our bodies in good health. However, the busy lifestyles led by the majority of people these days are far from ideal in terms of promoting optimal health and well-being. Work and family commitments frequently result in people ignoring their bodies’ cries to slow down and rest. Over time this can lead to chronic tension and muscular aches and pains, making it harder to relax and reducing both the amount and quality of sleep.

Rational osteopathic treatment is based on the following core principles:

The body is a unit.
Viewing the body as being made up of separate individual organs and tissues is done to make learning anatomy and physiology simpler. However, in reality the body functions as a single integrated unit. Disease in any organ or tissue will eventually impact upon the rest of the body.

The person is a unit of body, mind and spirit.
Holistic healthcare is about dealing with people, not just sore backs, headaches, etc. Effective resolution of problems may require considering the whole context in order to determine the factors, which may be contributing to and maintaining the problem (e.g. posture, nutritional status, stress levels, etc). Obtaining this type of information helps to tailor the treatment to the individual client.

The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance.
When given the appropriate nutrition and activity, the body is able to manufacture all the substances it needs for healthy functioning. Unfortunately, the nutritional quality of food these days is not as good as it used to be. Reasons for this include:

- essential nutrients in foods are either removed or destroyed by processing techniques (e.g. refined sugar and flours)

- vital soil organisms, which convert minerals into forms that can be absorbed and used by plants are killed by pesticides and chemical fertilisers

- fruit are picked early and artificially ripened, may be deficient in vitamins (e.g. vitamin C), which only accumulate in the fruit during the final days of ripening on the trees.

The structure and functioning of the body tissues are reciprocally interrelated.
This means that a change in structure (e.g. due to injury or disease) will lead to a change in the functioning of the tissues and organs. Likewise, how we use the body (e.g. posture, type and amount of physical activity, diet) will have an impact upon its structure.

What does osteopathic treatment involve?
The initial consultation involves taking a detailed medical history, conducting a general physical examination with focus on the problem region(s). The client will be provided with a rational diagnosis based on the history and examination findings. Treatment aims to restore balance to the body and may involve:

• Massage and stretching techniques.
• Articulation techniques – passive joint mobilisation.
• Muscle energy techniques – releasing contracted muscles by working against resistance.
• Counterstrain techniques – counter stretching restricted joints and muscles whilst in position of comfort in order to achieve release.
• Functional techniques – gentle joint mobilisation.
• Manipulation – to increase joint motion
• Visceral techniques – management of conditions affecting internal organs involving gentle and rhythmical stretching of the visceral areas.

These days, healthcare practitioners prefer to use the term ‘client’ rather than ‘patient’. Research has shown that ‘patients’ have much better treatment outcomes when they take an active role in managing their own health, rather than just receiving passive treatment and doing nothing for themselves. The reason behind this is presumably because people learn to get more control over their health and therefore their lives.

What can osteopathy do for you?

Osteopathic care can:
• provide pain relief
• address the underlying causes of painful conditions and pain syndromes
• teach you how to take back control of your life by avoiding or minimizing the factors which maintain and perpetuate the problem

Finally, the great thing about osteopathy is that it is 100% natural and works together with your own body to restore health and vitality!
