What is Psychotherapy and Who can Benefit?
Psychotherapy is a clinical approach aimed at relieving psychological distress, developing self-awareness, promoting positive change, and resolving relationship issues.
A professional psychologist or psychotherapist works in a clearly defined and contracted way to help you achieve your treatment goals. The frequency and length of treatment will vary depending on the nature and severity of the issues and the goals for the treatment.
It is an appropriate form of treatment for anybody who is experiencing psychological distress. This may range from relatively mild issues (such as a lack of direction in life, or the experience of repetitive frustrations in relationships), to more severe issues which may be diagnosed as a mental health disorder (such as major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, an anxiety disorder, an addictive disorder, or a personality disorder).
Evidence for the Effectiveness of Psychotherapy
There is a public perception, still prevalent in some circles today, that psychotherapy and other talk-therapies are ‘soft’ approaches to mental health treatment, or that evidence for their effectiveness is lacking. This perception is countered by what is now a very large and still growing body of scientific evidence that supports the efficacy of psychotherapy for the treatment of a wide variety of psychological and emotional issues. For example, several recent meta-analyses of psychotherapy outcome research have shown improvements to be in the order of three to six times higher than the effect sizes commonly reported for anti-depressant medication (eg. Abbass et al., 2006; Leichsenring et al., 2004; Moncrieff et al., 2004).
The false perception that there is scant evidence for the efficacy of psychotherapy is perhaps a hangover from earlier times during which psychological theories and methods were often based on speculative claims made by influential figures – theories and methods which were later disproved. Modern psychotherapy, in contrast, is informed by a large body of accumulated evidence in areas as diverse as neuroscience, developmental psychology, family systems theory, modern memory studies, and trauma theory.
