Pilates

Pilates mat classes involve a series of exercises that are gentle on joints yet challenging on muscles. Pilates aims to create a balance in the body, and is designed to cater for the needs of the individual, with emphasis on reducing incidence of back pain and injury.

Exercises are suitable for anyone who wants to improve muscle strength and flexibility, co-ordination and balance, tone muscles and improve posture. The Pilates system works the body as a whole, co-ordinating the upper and lower musculature with the body’s centre, strengthening core muscles such as the stomach muscles, inner thighs and shoulder stabilisers.

Once you've been doing Pilates for a while, you may find yourself sitting, standing and walking more gracefully and with less stress on your body.

Created over eighty years ago by Joseph H. Pilates, the exercise system was initially popular with dancers and other performers and has since gone on to become more commonly practiced by individuals of varying ages and abilities, and athletes wishing to improve overall performance in their chosen field.

1 hour classes consist of moving through a sustained series of exercises and stretches using abdominal control and proper breathing. The quality of each posture is what's important, not the number of repetitions or how energetically you can move.

Massage

Pregnancy Massage

Massage during and shortly after pregnancy is a safe, nurturing and wonderful experience when performed by a fully qualified Remedial Massage Therapist.

Techniques such as gentle massage, stretching and mobilization are used during a pregnancy massage to relieve aches and pains in the back, shoulders, neck, legs and arms.

How safe is Pregnancy Massage?
During the first trimester it is usually safe to have a massage (*refer Note 1), as the therapist does not work heavily on the lower back area thereby reducing any risks involved whilst the foetus is attaching to the placenta wall. As the pregnancy progresses the therapist is still able to perform a massage by positioning you on your side using pillows and towels to support your body, making you as comfortable as possible, allowing you to truly relax and enjoy the experience.

Generally, massage is not performed on the tummy during pregnancy except to gently oil the skin. Gentle ‘baby lift’ techniques may also be used to relieve the mother of the weight of the baby for a short time (*refer Note 2).

* Note 1: Expectant mothers who have complications at the start of, or at any time during their pregnancy should seek written approval from their obstetrician prior to having a massage.
* Note 2: Techniques not used if baby’s head has engaged.

How will I benefit from Pregnancy Massage?
Pregnancy massage offers relief from common discomforts of pregnancy such as:
  • Insomnia and stress
  • Lower back and pelvic pain
  • Hip and leg pain, including oedema, varicose veins and leg cramps
  • Upper back, shoulder and neck pain
  • Gastrointestinal discomforts
  • Breathing discomforts
  • Hypertension
  • Headaches
  • Preparation for labour

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage incorporates scientific massage techniques to alleviate discomfort and pain in the body’s musculo-skeletal system, and is usually performed when chronic conditions exist or when specific injuries have occurred.

Remedial massage helps to relax muscles, reduce swelling and to speed the healing process following strain and sprain injuries.

Massage however, cannot prevent loss of muscle strength nor reduce fat deposits.

Specific stretching techniques may also be used to help loosen tight muscles and increase muscle elasticity.

How will I benefit from Remedial Massage?
Remedial massage encourages healing by improving blood flow & lymph, increasing circulation and stimulating nerves. A remedial massage can help by;
  • Relieving headaches and neck pain
  • Counteracting the muscular effects of prolonged stress
  • Reducing tension in muscles and tendons
  • Assisting in the rehabilitation of strains and sprains
  • Stretching and loosening muscles and connective tissue

Sports Massage

There are 4 types of sports massage and various massage techniques are used:

1. Pre-event or warm up massage creates a state of readiness in muscles and tissues. Circulation is stimulated causing muscles to be flushed and oxygenated. Tight muscles can be relaxed and joints can be moved through their range of motion increasing flexibility.
Pre-event massage is usually performed 15 – 45 minutes prior to an event or activity, and is of short duration (approximately 20–30 mins). It is done at a moderate pace, is not painful and does not include high impact techniques.

2. Post-event massage or cool down massage is restorative, promotes a general state of relaxation and reduces muscle tension, spasm, cramping and muscle soreness. The length of recovery time from strenuous competition can be dramatically reduced with a good post-event massage.

3. Maintenance or fine tuning massage major benefits are obtained by regular on-going treatment sessions. Treatments can be weekly or fortnightly and in conjunction with the athletes training. The purpose of the massage is to keep the athletes muscles and tissues in optimum condition. These treatments allow the therapist to detect any undesirable effects of training or over-training that may cause dysfunction, injury or muscular imbalance.

4. Rehabilitation massage is for the chronically injured athlete or acute injuries that require rehabilitative massage. Treatments are designed to speed healing, aid in increasing range of motion, help soft pliable scar tissue to form, remove trigger points, reduce swelling, oedema, bruising and help maintain muscular balance. Deep massage is often used in this stage.

How will I benefit from Sports Massage?
It may be reasonably claimed that the greatest benefits of sports massage are in helping prevent injury, aid recovery and enhance athletic performance.

In general sports massage can benefit the athlete in the following ways:
  • Enable rapid recovery from injury with less likelihood of chronic problems
  • Reduce muscle pain and soreness, enabling muscles to recover faster, thereby allowing the athlete to train at a higher level
  • Promote overall muscle balance, freedom of movement and co-ordination
  • Directly benefit muscular, skeletal, nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems
  • Effectively reduce adhesions and varying degrees of scar tissue formation in soft tissues
  • Reduce oedema and promote circulation
  • Reduce cramping and spasm

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage is a system of long strokes, kneading, friction, vibration techniques, and passive movement of the joints. It is a non-intrusive therapy that helps relax, revitalize and rejuvenate mind, body and soul.

How will I benefit from Therapeutic Massage?
Therapeutic massage is designed to induce general relaxation, improve circulation and flexibility, relieve pain and discomfort from muscle tension and stiff joints, reduce mental and physical stress and shorten recovery time from muscular strain.

Performed on a regular basis, therapeutic massage may help to relieve (or reduce) the following conditions:
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Muscle tension and pain
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Backaches
