Yoga Therapy
Yoga Therapy is the application of yoga to specific health concerns. It combines traditional yoga with modern medicine to provide an effective method for managing and alleviating a wide variety of ailments.
Yoga Therapy can alleviate many health issues - for other conditions it can be restorative or palliative. Whereas ordinary yoga classes can be beneficial for general health, Yoga Therapy focuses on an individual’s particular health needs given their own condition.
Yoga Therapy uses a series of simple gentle postures, breathing exercises, meditation, relaxation and other techniques which empower you to look after your own health and well-being. It is this self-healing that will help to promote the restoration of a balance between your mind and your body
Following a consultation to determine presenting conditions, health and lifestyle factors a structured programme is tailored for you which is appropriate for your needs.
Counselling
I have been working as a therapist for 10 years and have learned many different approaches. I draw from these approaches to address the specific needs of the indivdual, couple or family with whom i'm working.
All of these are strengths-base in the sense that they do not conceptualize "pathology" within a person but rather see indivuduals as doing the best they can within the circumstances in with they find themselves.
I incorporated aspects of the Milan Systemic approach, Narrative, Emotional Freedom Technque. I have also been influenced by the Solution Focused approach, Mindfulness, Cogntive Behaviour Therapy, Art Therapy, Yoga & Buddhist Psychologly and Neuro Science.
What issues bring people to therapy?
They experience negative feelings such as depression, anxiety, panic, stress, prolonged grief.
They would like to reflect on past or current relationships and learn new ways relating, developing healthier relationships. They are seeking to feel better about them selves, increase self esteem, ablility to trust or experiencing intimacy.
They have memories about a distrubing or traumatic event that they are seeling to leave the associated bad feelings behind them and more on in life.

About Rachel Nokes
I attended my first yoga class in London with a friend in 1999. I've practiced on and off since then, my practice became part of my daily life after a spending 4 months in India in 2006 where i studied at the Sivananda ashram in Kerala Southern India.
On my return to Australia I embarked on a teacher training course with Samadhi Yoga in Newtown lead by Katie Manitsas. Having studied gymnastic's and gymastic coaching for many years it felt natural for me to get back in touch with my physical body. Through my study at Samadhi (now Jivamukti Sydney) my practice became more rounded and includes regular asana (postures), meditation, pranayama (breathing) studying yogic text and chanting. Recently i've been learning to play the harmonium it adds a wonderful vibration to the sanskrit mantras we chant in class.
I have studied with Sharon Gannon & David Life the founders of Jivamukti Yoga and i've studied in various yoga schools including Iyengar, Ashtanga, Satyananda, Krishnamacharya and Sivananda.
Whilst in India I experienced some Ayurvedic treatments including massage, shirodhara (warm oil poored onto the foreheard), herbal treatments and adjustments to my diet i had never felt better. On my return to Australia I studied with Mother Maya who has the Wise Earth Ayurvedic school and then i went on to study with Dr Rama Prasad Australia's leading Ayurvedic Doctor.
I have worked as a therapist since 2002. I have a Graduate Diploma in Couple & Family Therapy. I have been aware of the body mind connection for some time and now truely work holistically combing aspects of therapy, yoga & ayurveda (science of life). I am currently studying with Dr N Chandrasekaran through Yoga Therapy Australia in the Viniyoga tradition of Krisnamacharya.
