What is Lymphoedema therapy and compression bandaging?
Lymphoedema is an accumulation of protein rich fluids in the spaces between the cells due to the inability of the lymphatic system to remove it due to either surgical intervention of the lymph nodes or due to a congenital condition. This fluid in the tissues mean the cells which are immersed in it cannot function as well as they normally should and the tissues become clogged with wastes. The fluid and protein accumulation can cause a difference in the size of the limb affected and this can be diagnosed as lymphoedema.
Lymphoedema can be managed and Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) combined with compression bandaging is invaluable in the treatment of lymphoedema. Clinical treatment is aimed at reducing the swelling and it is important to note that MLD alone is not a suitable treatment for lymphoedema. MLD is only one component of the two-pronged therapeutic process - Phase I - behind complete decongestive therapy and this can be carried out as often as once every two to three weeks in hot weather and once in four weeks in cooler weather. The therapy is done with with the patient lying down and the patient is advised on self care techniques. This often fosters self reliance and patient independence. Phase II uses custom made compression stockings, if necessary complemented by bandaging. This method maintains and often improves on the results of Phase I.
In Phase II advanced cases, an MLD treatment of once or twice weekly is sufficient. An exercise routine and skin skin is also a very important component of managing lymphoedema.

Ali's assessments and treatments are structurally based; meaning that his treatment methods focus on restoring movement thereby, decreasing your pain. This is done by using a range of techniques such as massage, manipulations, muscle energy techniques, also indirect techniques in sensitive cases (S/CS, functional, OCF).
Ali advises on rehabilitation and exercises which are important in helping the patient manage their condition to prevent it from re-occurring in the long term.
Ali Youssel is also trained in fitting orthotics to correct biomechanical mal-alignments that start at the feet.
