I am (Roz Fitzgerald is) a qualified medical herbalist and member of the National Herbalists Association of Australia. An ex-registered nurse and midwife, I have a passionate belief that the future of health care is an integrative one between conventional and complementary medicines.
We each have our own innate ability to heal from within - no therapist of any kind can do it for us – but each world has its place and time to enable us to draw on that healing from within and allow it to happen. Most members of the community would have experienced the limited time available in a medical consultation and the almost inevitable pharmaceutical prescription that results. It is my experience that the majority of clients need to feel listened to. A quickly prescribed treatment whether pharmaceutical or more natural / neutraceutical may offer some relatively instant relief or support, but often is still just a cap on a Pandora’s Box of longer term dis-ease. A naturopathic consultation (or series of, as needed) aims to further explore the predisposing, excitatory and sustaining causes of dis-ease; thereby enabling considered supportive treatment, either alone or alongside conventionally prescribed medication. It is a patient’s right to decide how they will approach their wellness.
Today most Health Funds provide rebates for herbal medicine in recognition of the fact that the use of herbal medicine is well supported by both Australian and international evidence-based research, and utilizes traditional knowledge from civilizations around the world. In our world of access to medical, psychoneuroimmunological and genetic discoveries, herbal medicine is proving itself in many areas: a risk vs benefit analysis comparison of certain specific herbs with specific antidepressant medications demonstrates an equal benefit and much less risk profile for the herbs (references available on request).
Studies of some herbal medicines are also demonstrating epigenetic effect; whereby the genetic susceptibility to recurrence of a disease is modulated and gradually lessened. The risks of interactions with medications are thoroughly assessed by today’s qualified natural therapists; and co-operation with a patient’s GP / other practitioner is the desired process if it is the patient’s wish to reduce their medication (where safely feasible to do so).
To me a triumph is when a patient “gets it” – understands what is happening; that it is more than a simple process of “taking this for that”, and makes a contract with her/himself ( and me) to work towards wellness. This may warrant pathology testing in some cases where physical causes need to be clarified or allergies identified. I endeavour to assist the patient on their journey without the use of frequent in-clinic bio-medical testing, but will refer to other practitioners if necessary, eg for testing, massage, acupuncture, mind-body work.
Along with studying for my degree in Western Herbal Medicine at Endeavour College of Natural Therapies (previously ACNM), in recent years I have had experience working with chiropractors, and also currently in a multidisciplinary clinic which provides acupuncture, naturopathy and massage.
As a mother of two beautiful daughters, I recognize the commitment required to find balance and healing in our fast-paced digital world; but also understand the innate need in us all for strong family bonds which for some are lacking and who may need support from the extended family of the community.
