What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise that involves stretching, balancing, and strengthening. Exercises are performed on specially designed Pilates equipment and on exercise mats. Pilates is suitable for all people, at any level of fitness.
If done correctly Pilates will :-
- Build strength without ‘bulking up’
- Create a flat abdominal and strong back
- Develop good core stability
- Improve posture
- Improve flexibility and agility
- Improve range of movement
- Improve general health, and
- Reduce the incidences of back pain
Core strength is the foundation of Pilates exercise. The core muscles are the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and back. When the core muscles are strong and doing their job, as they are trained to do in Pilates, they work in tandem with the more superficial muscles of the trunk to support the spine and movement.
As you develop your core strength you develop stability throughout your entire torso. This is one of the keys to how Pilates helps people overcome back pain. As the trunk is property stabilized, pressure on the back is relieved and the body is able to move freely and efficiently.
Who benefits from Pilates?
Everybody can do Pilates and, everyone will benefit from the exercises no matter what age, body shape and fitness level you are in. Additionally, at RPPR Pilates we have access to medical doctors that are specialised in musculoskeletal and physical medicine. We provide mat and equipment classes, which are fully supervised, as well as private classes. We also provide pregnancy, rehabilitation and athletic training programs.
How much Pilates do I need?
This really depends on your individual needs and goals. In general it is ideal to do two sessions per week. If you specifically want to build strength quickly, then three times per week is recommended. Many people come once a week, this is still extremely beneficial provided that you attend on a regular basis. The key factors are regularity and consistency.
What is involved in a Pilates session in our studio?
A session at RPPR Pilates lasts one hour. There is one instructor and up to four clients per session. Your class starts with a warm up section. These exercises are generally done on the floor mats. Once you complete this you will move on to the various types of Pilates equipment.
Your instructor will give you various exercises that are specifically catered for your individual needs and goals. There will be a warm down section at the end of the class. Throughout the session, you are given full supervision to ensure that you perform the exercises correctly at all times.
For those of you who “Pilates” on a regular basis, your progression with us is constantly monitored, so that the prescribed exercises are challenging, beneficial as well as interesting for you. This is the critical difference at RPPR Pilates.
