What Can Homœopathy Treat?
Homœopathy is a complete system of medicine and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of many different conditions. This is because it looks at achieving balance in the body, and therefore it can be useful in almost every case of illness.
Homœopathy has been proven to be effective for the treatment of chronic illnesses like asthma, allergies, skin conditions such as eczema and acne, menstrual and reproductive system problems and recurrent sore throats to name but a few.
Homœopathy is also very effective in the treatment of acute illnesses like the flu, tonsillitis and ear infections, and for the first aid treatment of burns, bruises and other injuries.
Homœopathy acknowledges that many illnesses have an emotional cause (for example headaches caused by stress at work or at home) and is able to address these emotional symptoms and causes as part of treatment. In fact, homœopaths believe that an understanding of a person's mental and emotional symptoms can be vital to effective treatment and a prescription, especially in cases of chronic illness.
Homœopathy can also complement counselling in cases of emotional trauma, such as post-traumatic stress, prolonged grief or abuse.
Principals of Homœopathy
The Law of Similars
Homœopathy is based on the fundamental Law of Similars, or 'like cures like'. Homœopaths believe that medicine can only cure disease if it has the power to produce the same symptoms of that disease in a healthy person. The best example of this would be the use of specially prepared medicine made of onion (allium cepa) being used to treat hayfever. We all know that when we cut onions we experience stinging, weeping eyes and sneezing. So when a person comes in to clinic with hayfever presenting with these same symptoms they may be prescribed allium cepa.
The Law of Provings
In order to be able to prescribe based on the Law of Similars, homœopathy needs to know how a substance affects a healthy person. The test of a medicine on a healthy person is called a 'proving'. Many students and homœopaths volunteer to take part in proving our medicines to help further our understanding of the symptoms they produce, and so can treat. Homœopathic medicines are not tested on animals.
The Minimum Dose
The idea of homœopathy is to cure using the minimum amount of medicine and intervention. Homœopathic medicines are specially prepared by a process of serial succussions (vigorous shaking) and dilutions, so they contain infinitesimal amounts of the original medicine substance. In this way they are gentle and cause no side effects, but are still effective.

The Single Remedy
Because homœopathic medicines are proven singly, and act on the whole body to produce symptoms, it is important that only one remedy is prescribed at a time. This gives the homœopath a clearer indication of the action of the medicine and prevents problems with adverse effects from medicine interactions.
