Techniques

I use a broad range of treatment techniques:

Soft tissue manipulation (massage) involves gentle, sometimes firm, hands-on massage type techniques aimed at releasing tension and adhesions in tense or shortened muscles. Your practitioner specializes in soft tissue techniques and will often use these along with others to treat your condition.

Joint manipulation involves a very small movement applied to a joint with minimum force and maximum accuracy. This often produces a "click". This technique aims to decrease pain and improve the quality of movement of stiff and painful joints.

Muscle contraction and stretching involves gentle muscle contractions and practitioner-applied stretches to help improve mobility and muscle control, induce muscle relaxation and decrease pain.

Joint mobilisation and articulation involves rhythmically moving a body region to improve blood flow, nerve supply and movement, and decrease pain.

Myofascial Release is a specialized form of soft tissue treatment that aims to adjust postural tension patterns, neuro-muscular patterns, and joint fixations by stretching and 'releasing' the fascial structures of the body. Some people think of it as 'massage' without oil, however this is incorrect as the latest research shows its effectiveness is by stimulating the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). It is a very gentle and relaxing technique in most cases.

Cranial Osteopathy is a gentle hands on therapy that aims to BALANCE FLUID AND MEMBRANES IN THE BODY. It is used either as a stand alone therapy or combined with manipulation. It can be used both for diagnosis of myofascial and osseous strain patterns, and for their treatment. It is both a very effective and safe treatment especially for the elderly and the young. It is thought to work via the nerve receptors of the body altering membrane and fluid hemo-dynamics.

Functional Technique is an Osteopathic technique that works via the ANS. It is used to calm over stimulated joint receptors, which is the primary cause of most intrinsic muscles dysfunction around spinal and peripheral joints. It is also a very gentle technique that allows the myofascial structure to regain a comfortable tonus and length.

Acupuncture and Dry Needling both use acupuncture needles to pierce the skin and provoke a healing response. Acupuncture makes use of 3000 years of Chinese clinical observation and has developed a clinically effective reputation in the treatment of musculo-skeletal and neurological conditions. Dry Needling has emerged from the Pain Medicine field and is called 'Dry' needling because it does not use a hypodermic needle filled with medication, such as cortisone, to achieve an effect. Its effectiveness is currently ascribed to its effects on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), and its ability to increase micro-circulation, and restore normal muscle length and tone to injured tissue.

Simple Contact is a technique developed by Barrett Dorko, an American physiotherapist with a strong interest and knowledge in nerve pain and neurology. The technique has the practitioner encouraging the body to return to a position of ease, in the process easing restrictions on the nervous system thereby reducing swelling and increasing flexibility and self modulation. In 2006 I published an article, with 2 colleagues, on the use of this technique in the treatment and resolution of cervico-brachialga.

Neuralmobilization is a treatment approach that has emerged over the last decade that aims to increase the mobility and function of neural structures. Restriction in mobility has been shown to be both causative and accessory to most neuro-muscular pain. It has shown to be successful for chronic and acute conditions.

Conditions Treated

Osteopathy aims to improve body homeostasis.

Osteopathy works by correcting problems within the neuromuscular and skeletal systems. It aims to improve the efficacy and functioning of the body systems. This helps to unlock the body's self-healing mechanisms, helping your body to function normally again while reducing the chance of problems occurring in the future.

Osteopaths can diagnose, treat and prevent many conditions.

Osteopathy is a safe, gentle and effective approach using hands-on specific techniques to diagnose and treat a wide range of health problems. It aims to relieve pain, discomfort and immobility.

Its emphasis is on the interrelationship of the body's structure - such as muscles, bones, joints, nerves etc - and its function - such as breathing, circulation, digestion, metabolism etc. It is widely used throughout the world and recognized as one of the most highly effective complementary therapies with a vast and expanding base of scientifically validated research.

Osteopaths commonly treat:

* Back and neck pain, especially associated with pregnancy
* Sciatica
* Nerve disorders and injuries
* Headaches
* Sports injuries, such as tendonitis, bursitis, sprains
* RSI and work related injuries
* Pregnancy complaints
* Disc and joint injuries

Osteopathy can help effectively manage symptoms from:

* Arthritis
* Respiratory conditions such as asthma, sinusitis, breathing disorders
* Gynecological problems such as period pain, endometriosis
* Digestive complaints like irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, reflux, and constipation.
* Organic conditions such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and glandular fever.

Osteopathy is also suitable for babies, children and the elderly, and is an ideal treatment for back pain during and after pregnancy.
