SERVICES

Welcome to Scarborough Yoga Centre

The Scarborough Yoga Centre is an Astanga Vinyasa focused Yoga centre. Our aim is to pass on this beautiful and transformational tradition of Yoga to all students, as it has been transmitted to us.

The S.Y.C offers classes to suit everyone’s needs, from the raw beginner to the advanced practitioner. There is no competition in Yoga practice, and all students move with their own breath at their own pace. In all classes the emphasis is on developing correct understanding and technique for practice, while modifications, adjustments and variations of postures and breathing (Pranayama) techniques are always given for students at all levels of practice.

The Teachers

Morrison McQueen

Morrison began his path in meditation and Yoga in 1988 with a local meditation teacher. He started Iyengar style classes soon afterwards to help alleviate his suffering with long term knee and hip problems.

Following his first journey overseas culminating in a three month stay in a Zen Buddhist Monastery, he returned to W.A and completed a degree in Religious Studies at E.C.U. Morrison later studied a year of Anatomy and Physiology at U.W.A to gain an understanding of the physical body and is currently undertaking a degree in Psychology at E.C.U. He has also participated in numerous meditation retreats and monastery stays in the Thai Buddhist tradition both in Australia and Thailand.

Due to consistent practice and experience in teaching (teaching on average 15 plus classes per week since 1996) plus his understanding of the philosophy and techniques of the yoga and meditation traditions, Morrison can work with all levels of students from beginners to advanced.

Morrison's practice is informed by the shared aspects of the Indian and Chinese Yoga traditions, as well as the meditative traditions of South East Asia, Tibet and India.

After many years of practice and teaching in the Iyengar and Hatha styles, Morrison came upon the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga tradition. Morrison has been practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa exclusively since 1996, initially with various Australian Ashtanga teachers, then with his teachers Shri K.Pattabhi Jois and Sharath. Morrison continues to practise Ashtanga with Guruji and Sharath in Mysore and internationally at every opportunity.

Paul O'Sullivan

Di is a qualified primary school teacher who began practicing yoga in 2000 at the Scarborough Yoga Centre with Morrison. Di began yoga for the relaxation and breath work aspects. Six months after beginning her Yoga practice, she fell pregnant with her 3rd child, and continued doing Iyengar style Hatha yoga through her pregnancy. Di delivered her 3rd baby completely naturally, helped by the breathing techniques learnt in Yoga. The techniques Di gained from the yoga practice not only assisted with the birthing process, but also helped her with a speedy post partum recovery. After this experience, she was convinced of the many benefits of the Yoga techniques.

Her yoga practice stepped up a notch from then on, leading to her commencing the teacher training in 2003 with Morrison. Towards the end of her teacher training she began practicing exclusively in the Ashtanga Yoga tradition, and has been practicing daily since then. In 2007 & 2008, Di practiced with Guruji and Sharath in Mysore, India and is dedicated to practicing in this tradition

In teaching her general and pregnancy classes, Di's focus is mainly on awareness of internal strength, Bandha' and correct breathing. Di has also been teaching corporate classes since 2004 and enjoys the challenge of teaching to the many different levels of practitioners one finds in the corporate sector.

Di Newland

Paul started Yoga 20 years ago in Adelaide with Shandor Remete while working as a dancer and credits his extended dance career to his long term yoga practice. He currently teaches Hatha yoga in the Iyengar style and is engaged in deepening his knowledge of Iyengar yoga tradition through the ongoing Iyengar yoga teacher training program.

Paul’s classes are sometimes fast moving, sometimes slow, but generally a mix of active and passive poses designed to give the mind a place to dwell, and be still, however active the pose is.

Paul has been teaching at WAAPA, Edith Cowan University on and off since 1995. After a sojourn in QLD where he ran his own yoga school in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Paul spent 2007 choreographing and teaching dance in Singapore, where he also completed a Masters Degree in Creative Arts.

Paul’s seeks to use yoga as a holistic exercise to de stress from our busy lifestyles and turn our focus inwards. He teaches to find correct alignment, and to find the best balance between action and detachment in practice. Paul’s practice is informed by teachers from various yoga schools and physical disciplines. He encourages students to be pragmatic in their practice or in other words, if it works – it’s good. Paul struggles to remember that in life, like our yoga practice, the journey is the destination.
