About UsPhilosophy of the clinic
At the Shellharbour City Osteopathic Clinic we take a holistic view to the health of all those who seek treatment with us. This means that we always try to identify the health needs of the individual as a whole, not just the state of the muscles and joints. Our clinic is an integrated member of the medical and allied health system of the Illawarra. As such, we often refer to medical practitioners and specialists, naturopaths, yoga practitioners and other allied health providers if it is necessary for the best outcomes in your health.
What should I expect at my first appointment?
During your initial consultation there is great emphasis placed upon ensuring osteopathic treatment is appropriate and safe for your condition. This involves taking a detailed history of your pain presentation and your health as a whole.
A number of movement assessments and neuro-orthopaedic tests are also performed so that a more accurate diagnosis and safe treatment plan can be established. Osteopaths may also refer you for x-rays and/or other such diagnostic imaging tests in order to provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment strategy. In this way we can provide you with the safest possible treatment and establish an effective treatment plan and treatment goals.
Hands-on treatment usually commences in the first appointment. This may involve soft tissue massage techiques, joint mobilisation techniques and, if appropriate, joint manipulation. If there are certain techniques which you do not like or have had previous bad experiences with, osteopathic treatment is diverse enough to treat effectively whilst avoiding these techniques.
During a typical osteopathic consultation we will also be spend time giving exercises and stretches, nutritional advice and ergonomic workplace advice.
