What is Shi-atsu?
Shiatsu literally means finger pressure in Japanese or acupressure in Chinese. Shiatsu is an ancient massage therapy based on the Traditional Chinese medicine theories where your therapist applies finger and palm pressure along the energy channels or meridian lines on your body to increase the flow of energy “Chi” and blood circulation. Your health is reliant upon the smooth flow of chi through the meridians and internal organs. Chi is your life-force, it keeps you warm and nourished.
Shiatsu can be applied to your body with firm or gentle pressure. When the Shiatsu techniques are applied correctly by your qualified shiatsu practitioner, it should not cause any pain or bruising. You will feel calm and relaxed after the treatment. Any pain or discomfort you may have before the session is usually reduced and there is a feeling of physical lightness and wellbeing.
The shiatsu modalities offered here at Shan Lin Shiatsu are the Zen Shiatsu and Namikoshi Shiatsu. Zen Shiatsu is a gentle modality that applies the principle of Zen meditation, each pressure point is held meditatively for 3 to 7 seconds, allowing time for the energy to shift and balance. Gentle but effective finger and palm pressure are used in this modality to support and nurture people with energy, Chi and blood deficiencies. That is, people who are feeling tired, cold, lack of motivation and low in energy constantly.
Namikoshi Shiatsu modality applies firm pressure to bodies with lots of tension and stress; bodies with excess yang energy or chi, which causes stubborn stagnation and discomforts in joints or muscles. The aim is to disperse this excess energy and stagnation so that yin and yang energy can be balanced and blood flows to the area regained.
What are the differences between Shiatsu and normal massage?
Shiatsu is a full body treatment and focus on the connection with your inner energy to re-balance Chi or energy, promots inner peace and harmony. Shiatsu also uses limb stretches, joint mobilisations, breathing technique, shiatsu meridian stretches and dietary recommendation as part of the treatment.
Shiatsu is a deeper level of Relaxation Massage, it is a therapeutic and preventative health care, meeting the deeper level of needs in your body, be they mental, emotional and spiritual; to allow you to release those needs and make awareness of your wellbeing and self development. Shiatsu is about bringing you back to the centre and back to alignment with your physical and mental wellbeing; only then, your life can be fun, happy and exciting. You can only physically relax the muscles and body when your mind is relaxed and inner peace arises.
