SERVICES Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork that promotes health by restoring the body’s natural harmony. Through gentle pressure, moving and stretching the body and holding acupressure points, Shiatsu helps to unblock, nourish and balance the flow of qi (energy), allowing healing to take place.
Unlike many forms of body work, Shiatsu treats not only the symptoms but the causes of disease. Based on the holistic approach of Chinese medicine, it is a safe and gentle form of treatment that can assist with many common conditions including stress and anxiety, chronic pain including back pain and sciatica, fatigue, headaches and migraines, digestive disorders, PMT and menstrual problems such as period pain and fibroids, respiratory problems and musculo-skeletal conditions.
Shiatsu is particularly effective at shifting and resolving blocked or suppressed emotions which can lead to tension and illness.
What are Oriental Therapies?
Oriental Therapies includes Japanese needle therapy, moxibustion, cupping, spooning and dietary/lifestyle advice.
Japanese needle therapy involves the insertion of fine needles to stimulate acupuncture points. Unlike some other modalities such as Chinese acupuncture, Japanese needling uses very fine needles and is specifically designed to be painless, allowing the body to deeply relax during the treatment. Magnets and other polarity devices can be used instead of needles if required. Moxibustion involves warming specific points with a dried herb (artemisia) and is extremely nourishing and effective. Cupping and spooning are excellent techniques for stimulating qi movement and resolving muscle tension. Small variations in diet and lifestyle can be extremely effective when undertaken in conjunction with appropriate treatment.
My sessions involve a combination of these techniques as appropriate/desired to address both the symptoms of disease, and the underlying imbalances that cause them.
A little about me and how I work
I am a graduate from the Australian Shiatsu College, and have a diverse background in law and communications as well as experience in yoga, meditation, qi gong and other body awareness practices.
I have done post-graduate studies in Japanese needle therapy, and have recently undertaken studies in the US with master practitioners such as Kiiko Matsumoto and Waturo Ohashi.
My training emphasises the importance of deep relaxation to healing, and thus I ensure that my treatments are relaxing and nourishing as well as being extremely clinically effective.
I welcome the opportunity to establish ongoing relationships with people who are living with chronic conditions or wanting to change old patterns. I enjoy working with my clients to establish treatment plans, and to incorporate lifestyle and dietary recommendations to support the treatments.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like any further information about Shiatsu, Oriental Therapies or my approach.
