What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the world’s largest non-surgical, non-drug prescribing, primary healthcare profession. Chiropractic is concerned with realigning the spine and body mechanics for optimum health. Since the spine houses the central nervous system (which supplies every organ and tissue in the body), a misalignment in the spine can impinge on the nerves, which in turn stops the tissue/organ it supplies from working properly. For example, a misalignment in the neck can cause a headache or a misalignment in the back can cause pain in the leg.

What can a chiropractor do for you?

Chiropractors specialize in the treatment of the spine and its associated tissues; such conditions chiropractors commonly treat include:
  • Back tension/tightness
  • Low back pain
  • Disc injuries
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Scoliosis
  • Shoulder/elbow/wrist/knee/hip pain
  • Childhood complaints ie. Bedwetting, colic, growing pains

FAQ'S......

1.How long does a treatment take?

Your first treatment is up to 40 minutes and involves a comprehensive medical history taking, examination and treatment.
Subsequent treatments are 10-20 minutes.

2.What does a treatment involve?

Your first treatment will involve an analysis/medical history where Katie will ask you specific questions related to your injury or health issue.

Brief soft tissue work/massage is used to help remove any muscle tension and allow your adjustment to ‘hold’ longer.

Katie then uses ‘Applied Kinesiology’ (a form of muscle testing) to identify spinal fixations, rotations, and areas of weakness within the body.

Once the affected areas have been identified, they are corrected using adjustments.

3.What types of ‘adjustments’ does Katie use?

There are three main types of adjustments Katie uses:
    A)‘joint and disc decompressions’ whereby joints are gently pushed into a better alignment;

B)‘activator’ adjustments. An ‘Activator’ is a hand-held tool which does a pulse to the spine to correct the mis-alignment

C)‘manual’ adjustments are where you here a ‘crack’ in the joint.

4.What type of adjustment will be used in my case?

Which form of adjustment you get depends on several factors.
1.how comfortable you are with adjustments/prior chiropractic experience.

2.how severe your condition is and how long you’ve had it for.

3.your age. ie children and babies, the elderly or those with osteoporosis would usually only get an ‘activator’ adjustment.

Katie will demonstrate or discuss the options available to you and which she would suggest in your particular case.

5.What ages and types of people get Chiropractic?

All ages and all types. Katie treats many babies with colic for example, right through to the elderly. Treatments are tailored to the individual.
She treats people from all walks of life-computer workers, athletes, mums, dads, tradespeople, nurses, teachers, doctors, lawyers, students and children, retirees, etc etc

6.How much is it?

Your first consultation is $82, including treatment.
Subsequent treatments are $52.

We have Hicaps, so if you are in a health fund, the receptionist will swipe your card, so you just pay the gap. You can check with your specific health fund how much they cover, as they all vary.

7.Will I have to have X-Rays?

No. Katie is qualified to take, interpret and diagnose X-Rays, however this will not be required for your treatments. If a suspected underlying condition may be present, Katie will refer you for X-Rays which are bulk-billed.

8. I’ve never been to a Chiropractor and don’t know what to expect, in fact I think I’m a little scared….

Katie is not scary- she is a friendly and caring person who will talk you through each step of the treatment. There are no surprises. Katie discusses what she needs to do, how she needs to do it and asks if this is OK with you. She can tailor treatments to your comfort level. Her aim is to help you get better quickly and be at your optimal health.

9.I have a ‘bad back’ how long will it take to fix?

The number of treatments required to fix your back depends on several factors:
  • What the injury is (it may be a muscle strain or joint misalignment right through to multiple disc bulges or ruptures).

  • How long you’ve had the injury (scar tissue may have set in which can slow progress). eg. Have you had the problem for 2 days or 20 years.

  • How closely you adhere to Katie's advice on treatment scheduling, stretching, strengthening, the things 'to do’ and things ‘not to do’.

  • Your body’s ability to ‘heal'; eg smokers can take three times longer than non-smokers to heal due to poor capillary fill.

Katie will give you a guideline of how many treatments it will take to correct your spine and maintain your spinal health. Depending on your situation, ie long standing disc bulges causing frequent flare-ups, Katie may suggest ‘maintenance treatments’ which are check-ups once you're out of pain to prevent recurrence of the injury, optimise nervous system function and minimise pressure on 'worn' joints. Maintenance may be once a month or once every six months if required however this is always up to you.

10.How does an adjustment help me?

An adjustment is a correction performed to a stuck or misaligned joint.
A stuck or misaligned joint will inhibit nerve flow to the tissue it supplies.
A stuck/twisted joint acts like a kink in a hose, the nerve flow becomes diminished.
An adjustment corrects the misaligned or stuck joint/disc and thereby allows the proper nerve flow, and your body can than begin to heal itself.

11.What types of things does she treat?
  • Back and neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Headaches and migraines-often the result of a neck misalignment
  • Disc problems
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Knee injuries
  • Hip injuries
  • Jaw problems-clicky, off-centre or painful jaw
  • Stomach pains, irritable bowel, constipation/diarrhea, bloating, excess flatulence
  • Pregnancy-Katie does Chiropractic for all stages of pregnancy, adjustments have been shown to reduce labour time and pain by reducing any pelvic rotations.
  • Children’s Health-From persistent bed wetting (often a misalignment of the sacrum bone) to eczema, growing pains, scoliosis and poor posture
  • Colic in babies-Often due to a misalignment in the spine or bowel, causing pain and discomfort for the child (and the parents!).
  • Fertility Issues-Spinal adjustments can help assist fertility, a twist in the female lumbar spine or pelvis may inhibit nerve flow to vital reproductive organs-ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus. An adjustment will remove this nerve interference and allow maximal function of these organs. An adjustment every two weeks is recommended to assist female fertility and hundreds of our clients are testament to this.
