Cosmetic Dentistry
A smile is not simply a row of teeth. The teeth need to be in harmony with the lip line and in perfect balance with the face.
At Smile Solutions, Melbourne dentists Dr Kia Pajouhesh and Dr Peter Henderson both highly experienced clinicians in the field of cosmetic dentistry, in combination with Specialist Prosthodontist Dr Eric Tan will provide you with all the latest cosmetic dental options to fit your individual needs and expectations.
Conventional cosmetic dentistry focuses on teeth whitening and porcelain veneers and crowns. In the new age of cosmetic enhancement, procedures may include a variety of specialised fields, including:- Internal braces to reposition misaligned teeth prior to conventional cosmetic
dentistry
- Laser gum lifts to create a harmonious gum line as a backdrop to your smile
- Cerec one-visit ‘porcelain’ restorations on back teeth to replace unsightly dark silver fillings often visible in the corners of your mouth
- A hygiene program with a skilled hygienist to improve your general gum health to better show off your improved teeth
- Dental implants replacing gaps or inadequate fixed bridges or removable partial dentures.
On a sound foundation, conventional cosmetic dentistry may include:- Porcelain veneers or all-ceramic crowns carried out by a Specialist Prosthodontist or a highly skilled dentist in the field of cosmetic dentistry, and a master dental ceramist with a keen eye and attention to detail
- One-hour teeth whitening procedures such as Zoom or Brite Smile.
Large, colour Before and After digital and printed images of cosmetic dentistry performed for Smile Solutions clients are available for you to compare and contrast the options available to you. In the case of porcelain veneers and gum lifts, a mock-up appointment with resin material allows you to visualise and discuss your options with your dentist before treatment. A separate ‘dress rehearsal’ appointment before final placement of your crowns or veneers can also greatly help us achieve a truly beautiful result for you to enjoy for many years to come.

Dental Implants
At Smile Solutions Dr James van den Berg who has a Masters degree in Periodontics (a study of gums and dental bone support) works in combination with Mr Mark Badcock, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, and Dr Eric Tan, a registered Specialist Prosthodontist (a study of fixed crowns and bridges) to comprehensively cater for all your dental implant requirements.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental Implantation is a procedure to replace missing teeth, or teeth you cannot save with conventional means.
They can vary from single tooth replacement to a complete upper and lower arch replacement.
Dental Implants are made of titanium and the crowns are made usually of high grade porcelain fused to precious metals such as gold.

Suitability for Dental Implants
You are a potential candidate provided you have:- Adequate bone with regard to quality and volume
- Good oral hygiene and
- Meet the general medical requirements
Bone quality and volume will be determined by examination prior to commencement of treatment.
We will consult with you and assess your suitability, time requirements and complete costing for the procedure wether you choose to have the procedure done in the dental chair under local anaesthetic, or in hospital under general anaesthetic.

Orthodontic Care
At Smile Solutions, Dr Geoffrey Hall, a registered Specialist Orthodontist can offer you clear external braces and now even internal braces, which sit on the inner aspect of your teeth — you could have your teeth straightened and no one will ever know.
This branch of dentistry concerns itself with the correction of the positions of the teeth, improving the occlusion (bite) of teeth, as well as the appearance of the jaws and face. In most cases, orthodontic treatment involves braces on upper and lower teeth. Individuals with poor alignment of the jaws may require extra treatment in the form of orthopaedic appliances, or jaw surgery.

Cerec Porcelain Fillings
When it is time to replace your old amalgam silver fillings with a natural looking tooth coloured alternative, you have a choice of composite resin or porcelain.
Traditional composite resin white fillings are most suited to smaller sized cavities.
CEREC Porcelain Fillings
CEREC 3D and CEREC AC, both available at Smile Solutions, are the world’s leading systems for fabricating all ceramic fillings in one single visit. CEREC restorations are a superior alternative to amalgam (silver) and composite resin (white) fillings.
The most common use for CEREC includes replacement of large old amalgam and composite fillings that have failed, fractured or decayed.
CEREC restorations have many advantages over other conventional fillings including:- Superior aesthetics - porcelain is far more natural looking than composite resin (plastic) fillings.
- Superior restoration strength - guaranteeing greater longevity.
- Single visit ceramic restoration — thus removing the need for multiple appointments. Benefits of this include greater time efficiency, no need for multiple local anaesthetics, and no need for temporary interim fillings.
- Conservation of healthy tooth structure — Large CEREC restorations are an ideal alternative to potentially short lived composite resin fillings or Full Coverage Crowns, which usually result in greater removal of natural healthy tooth structure.

Laser Dentistry
At Smile Solutions Dr James van den Berg who has a Masters degree in Periodontics (a study of gums and dental bone support) will consult you regarding your suitability for laser dentistry.
The use of Laser is one of the most significant advances in dentistry in decades. The technique provides a solution for those who dislike needles, drills and painful dental procedures. With the advent of dental lasers patients can now receive a better quality of dental care, with fewer visits and without many of the discomforts of traditional dentistry.
At Smile Solutions we use (1) Versa Wave, (2) Light Touch ErYAG, and (3) Fox Diode laser systems. We have found this trio of laser equipment to be the best combination available on the market.
Laser Fillings
The greatest benefit of laser fillings is that needles and drills are usually not required! This means no more high-pitched drilling noises and no more numb lips.
Lasers are more accurate at drilling teeth than conventional drills, as they remove only the decayed part of the tooth, and not the enamel. Conventional drilling can cause tiny cracks in the tooth - these do not occur with lasers.
Laser fillings take about the same amount of time as a conventional filling. If you require multiple fillings, the laser will actually reduce the amount of time you spend in the dental chair. And unlike conventional filings, laser fillings can be done in all parts of the mouth during one visit.
Occasionally, a laser dentist may still need to use a drill - for instance for removal of amalgam fillings. However, because lasers are effective in reducing sensitivity, most patients won’t require a needle, and those with sensitive teeth will benefit from reduced sensitivity after the filling.
Laser Gum Surgery
Most soft tissue procedures that would normally be carried out with a scalpel and abundant need for local anaesthesia can now be carried out more quickly and effectively with laser. Often no local anaesthetic (injection) is required as the laser is virtually painless. No stitches are required and therefore healing can be up to 5-6 times more rapid.
For example a cosmetic gum lift across the front six teeth using laser as opposed to conventional gum surgery would require you to spend less than half the time in the dental chair, and it will cost you half as much. You can achieve a predictable outcome with little or no bleeding, no stitches and you are unlikely to need post-operative painkillers. You can also have your teeth whitened or prepared for porcelain veneers within a week - not the obligatory 6-8 weeks healing required with conventional gum surgery.

Children's Dentistry
Dr Rebecca Williams’ greatest passion is managing children and their oral health. Utilising the latest advances in dentistry including laser, digital x-rays and ozone therapy and working in conjunction with three experienced therapists she will be delighted to cater for all of your children’s dental needs and requirements.
We advise parents to introduce their child to professional dental care from the age of three. This may include watching a parent have their teeth cleaned, or having their own baby teeth counted and polished with a soft brush. This experience is a positive one and is encouraged with each appointment thereafter.
This process of familiarization allows your child to grow with little or no anxiety towards the benefits of preventative care. Having a bad experience at the dentist at a young age often results in a fear of dental care in later years.
If your child is already anxious, patience, time and the soft approach of our experienced team is the solution. We like to call this our “teddy bear therapy”. In certain instances Dr. Williams may recommend sedation or general anaesthetic for the management of a special needs or highly anxious child.
Dr Geoffrey Hall, a specialist orthodontist can also advise you on your child’s orthodontic needs. A consultation with Geoffrey can be arranged for a complete analysis for children seven years and older.

Wisdom Teeth
Mr Mark Badcock is a registered Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon with both Medical and Dental degrees. He will assist you with an assessment of your wisdom teeth at Smile Solutions.
What are they?
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt into your mouth, usually at 16 — 23 years of age. Frequently there is not enough room for normal eruption and these teeth therefore become ‘impacted’.
Why do they need to be removed?
Impacted wisdom teeth can cause- Infection of adjacent gum tissue
- Dental decay of adjacent teeth
- Crowding of front teeth
- In rare cases cysts
When should they be removed?
It is well documented that removal of wisdom teeth in young adults (below the age of 25) is associated with less after operation pain and swelling. Therefore if it is determined that the wisdom teeth are likely to cause problems it is usually recommended to have them removed earlier rather than later.
Will you be awake or asleep during the procedure?
This will always be your choice although recommendations will be made during your consultation appointment and your options assessed.
How much will it cost?
An itemised quotation will be provided to you during your consultation appointment. This will include an estimate of hospital and anaesthetic fees if required. You may then wish to contact your health insurance fund to assess your ‘out of pocket’ expenses.
Do I need to see a specialist?
General Dentists may extract wisdom teeth although many now choose to refer these cases to a specialist oral surgeon. If you wish to be asleep for the procedure or your extractions are expected to be more complex then it is best to be treated by a registered specialist.
Are there any risks?
As with all surgical procedures there are general and specific risks associated with removal of wisdom teeth. The risks associated with your particular case will be discussed in detail during your consultation.

Root Canal Therapy
At Smile Solutions Dr Gregory Tilley (a highly experienced Registered Specialist Endodontist), and Dr Chankhrit Sathorn (a Registered Specialist Endodontist with a PhD in the field) will care for all your Root Canal related treatment requirements.
Inflamed Teeth
A damaged tooth that has inflammation of the pulp (nerve) can be acutely painful for the patient and can only improve with professional treatment.
How we can help
Often, the patient can be distressed and in considerable pain. By ensuring a prompt response from one of our expert root canal specialists, we can relieve the stress for both the patient and the referrer
What we do
Treatment is geared towards removal of the inflamed tissue, full preparation of the canal systems and full obturation, ensuring that, combined with a good crown or filling, bacteria can be prevented from multiplying in the canal spaces. Prognosis in this instance is usually very good and success rates of 95% are not unusual.
Infected Teeth
The situation can be worse if the nerve or blood vessel has disintegrated and bacteria have colonised the root canal system. This can lead to abscess formation, with the bacteria sending toxins right into the jaw bone.
How we can help
With the use of the most modern equipment, microscopes, nickel titanium files and ultrasonic activated irrigant systems, we can make sure the canals are as clean as possible. We then seal them with thermoplasticised gutta-percha to ensure a three-dimensional seal.
What we do
Treatment is more demanding where infection is present, as it then involves cleaning the contaminated root canal system of all bacteria. Canals are complex, three-dimensional spaces where absolute sterility will not occur, so the aim of sealing the canals is to trap any remaining bacteria and prevent any nutrients getting to them so that they will no longer be viable.

Before - Infected molar tooth before treatment showing large abcess. |
After - Root canal treated tooth after 3 months showing bone healing. |
Even with the most advanced and efficient mechanical equipment, it is impossible to get rid of all the bacteria, so we employ various irrigants, to further cleanse the canals and increase the chances of a successful first-time treatment.
As long as there are no fresh sources of leakage and the tooth is well sealed, a very high success rate of about 90% can be expected.
