Sophie Donovan, Accredited Instructor, has qualified to teach Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels of Pilates Floor classes, and Pilates for Pregnancy. After several years teaching group fitness classes in gyms and health clubs, and after successfully establishing a personal training business, Sophie now exclusively devotes her time to educating individuals about the benefits of Pilates. "It is a thinking person's workout," says Sophie, "because your mind is required to engage with your body to perform the movements correctly as you experience a new awareness of muscle function and control." SOFIT Pilates began offering courses in 2002 and since that time participants working at various levels of ability have been catered for by qualified and experienced instructors. The use of small apparatus such as the Pilates Circle, Mini Ball and resistance bands are incorporated to provide variety in safe and effective classes, and participants ranging in ages from teenagers to senior citizens enjoy the many benefits of SOFIT Pilates courses in modern comfortable facilities.

Who can benefit from Pilates?
Men and women ranging in ages from teenagers to senior citizens can benefit from Pilates, regardless of their current level of fitness.

What is the difference between classes offered by SOFIT Pilates and those found in many larger health clubs and gyms?
SOFIT Pilates classes are limited to 15 people where individuals are carefully supervised by an Accredited Instructor constantly roaming the room and monitoring each person's technique. The facilities where classes are held are clean, modern and comfortable, where participants are guided through each exercise within their own ability in a non-intimidating environment.

Can I do Pilates with an existing injury i.e. a back problem?
Of course that depends entirely on the injury. However participants of SOFIT Pilates classes include individuals who have undergone a spinal fusion, double hip replacements, knee replacements - all of whom have completed any required rehabilitation and have obtained their doctors permission prior to enrolling in classes. Individuals perform the exercises within their own limitations and have benefited from the increase in strength and flexibility obtained through Pilates.

Does Pilates compliment other exercise methods?
Absolutely. Participants enrolled in SOFIT Pilates classes include weight trainers, runners, boxers, swimmers - all of whom have experienced a greater understanding of how proper posture, core strength and flexibility can enhance other activities.


What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
Pilates requires you to set a posture and then challenge the torso by moving the limbs in a repetitious manner. Yoga moves from one static posture to the next with no repetitions.


Can I try one class before enrolling in an eight week course?
The Pilates method of exercise is a progressive learning experience and therefore one cannot appreciate all the benefits from a single class. SOFIT Pilates does not offer casual classes for this reason.

What do I need to bring and wear?
Mats and cushions are provided however, in the interests of hygiene, participants are required to bring along a towel large enough to lie on. Comfortable, snug-fitting clothes that do not restrict movement, together with a drink bottle for hydration is recommended. Shoes are removed during the class.

"I decided to enroll in a Pilates class to regain some of my body strength and fitness lost, when I stopped regular exercise two years ago. I chose Sofit Pilates because it was taught by an accredited instructor in a course structure that allowed me to move as my strength and skills progressed. Since attending classes, I have benefited from more than just physical improvement. My muscles are much stronger and more toned, in particular my stomach muscles. I have the ability to use breathing and posture skills in everyday activities, reducing strain on other muscles such as my back. The style of teaching in the classes allows me to do each movement to my own ability.
