What’s a Doula?

A doula ‘mothers the mother’ and provides ongoing physical (non-medical), emotional and informational support to the birthing couple during the birth and the immediate post birth period. A doula usually meets with the couple at least once or twice before the birth to get to know you a little. Seeing a familiar face in the labour room can be a huge comfort.

I also provide an extensive post natal service, offering support in the way of perhaps cooking a meal, taking the baby for a walk so Mum can have a sleep, putting on a load of washing or doing the vacuuming, offering breast feeding support and so on.

Why Hire a Doula?

Some of the benefits of employing a doula:
  • Up to a 50% reduction in caesarean rate
  • Increased chance of spontaneous vaginal birth
  • Reduced desire for pain medication.
  • Fewer episiotomies
  • Shorter labours
  • Reduced assisted delivery (use of forceps and vacuum extraction)
  • Increased chances of successful breastfeeding
  • Reduced incidence of postpartum depression
  • Reduced levels of anxiety during labour
  • Better mother-baby interaction
  • Increased confidence in ability to birth naturally
  • Increased confidence in ability as to mother
  • A more positive birth experience for mother and partner
About Sarah

I’m a devoted Mum of 2 beautiful yoga babies, born with love in water. The beauty of their births led me to offer my skills and experience to birthing women and couples in the hope inspiring confidence and trust in themselves through pregnancy and birth. I have been teaching Yoga in Pregnancy since 2004 and have been attending births as a certified doula since 2007.

My practice is built upon my belief in conscious, empowered birth, where the birthing woman is in tune and in charge. It is my goal to support and encourage women to discover their Birthing Power, to uncover their deeply rooted preconceptions about birth, and to ask women to challenge these beliefs in order to attain the best possible outcome for their own unique set of circumstances.

I had wonderful birthing experiences personally, and I believe that all women deserve the opportunity to experience the same joyful exhilaration. The relaxed and stress free entrance of my children influenced our relationship immediately and immeasurably, as they began their breathing life in my arms, with my love and full, undivided, uninterrupted attention. By providing nurturing guidance to help women to remain calm, strong, relaxed and in charge, I hope they too can birth in a naturally joyous way.

I use many different techniques, depending on each couple’s individual needs, such as massage, aromatherapy, art therapy, yoga, meditation, dance, visualisation and meditation. All of these elements in combination are very beneficial in encouraging couples to believe in themselves and each other, to uncover their beliefs, needs and desires when it comes to the birthing process.

My role as a doula is not only to provide information, but rather to provide guidance and support while parents are considering the choices available, encouraging and nurturing, caring for the birthing couple as I received loving care. I also provide practical assistance in the form of labouring and birth positions, breathing and relaxation to facilitate a positive birthing experience.

I teach techniques to ease the discomforts of pregnancy and the mental stress that can sneak up as the birth approaches, and to remain relaxed through the challenging birth experience and early post partum period.

I provide a service of compassionate care, accepting and supporting differing religious and spiritual beliefs and allowing parents to find their way through the confusing maze of information and medical terms to make educated decisions and reach their goal.

By combining my skills and knowledge in different areas, I provide a unique service of support, information and inspiration through all stages of pregnancy, birth and beyond.
