Our Story
Bikram Yoga Studio New Town is Hobart’s hottest place to be! It is a fresh and exciting studio offering you the true experience of Bikram Yoga.
At Studio New Town you will be met with a warm and friendly environment, one where you can feel comfortable, nurtured, safe, challenged and inspired. You can be sure that all of the teachers have been trained and certified by Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury and his staff of senior teachers. Studio New Town ensures that the highest quality of heating, hygiene and safety standards are maintained and will go above and beyond to give the students of Hobart an enriching Bikram Yoga experience.
About Us
Ben and Anna Korkmaz began putting the wheels in motion to open a studio back in February 2010, when they could see a need for an affiliated Bikram Yoga studio in Tasmania. Having grown up in Hobart, they both have a connection with the Tasmanian people and way of life and wanted to give back to the local community.
After starting their Bikram Yoga practice several years ago, they felt immediate benefits as a result. Ben had suffered from severe back pain for many years, yet after being in the hot room and slowly performing each posture, his pain began to subside. He continued to work through his physical pain and before long he was able to practice the yoga postures with very little pain and more range of motion. Anna began practicing during a very low emotional point in her life and realised that after each class – she felt happy! With every class that she did, she simply felt lighter and more free. The emotional release she felt during her yoga practice made her happier than she had been in a long time and Ben agreed! Although their levels of physical, mental and emotional healing were different, Ben and Anna both knew that they simply had to share this gift of yoga with others. Anna completed her training in 2009 and has been travelling Australia-wide teaching since then. Ben will be attending Bikram’s teacher training in 2011 and will then be teaching at Studio New Town.
Studio New Town has been a labour of love for Ben and Anna as they have worked day and night to bring Bikram Yoga and all its benefits to Hobart. They will be bringing you certified teachers from across Australia, as well as overseas and are excited about their journey ahead.
They hope that through this endeavour, others are inspired to give Bikram Yoga a go and join the community being created at Bikram Yoga Studio New Town.
Our Studio
At Studio New Town you will be met with friendly staff, certified Bikram Yoga teachers, a community of like-minded people and quality, state of the art facilities.
Our heating system has been especially engineered with a team from both Melbourne and Hobart and combines the best of natural gas heating, clean, fresh oxygen, and humidity. This ensures an optimum environment for Bikram Yoga practice.
The studio is large with good lighting and is carpeted with Flotex carpet. This has been especially made using an anti-microbial treatment, to protect against bacteria. At Studio New Town we provide natural cleaning products from Clean Conscience, which uses natural ingredients without harsh chemicals. Andrew and Tracey have designed a formula especially for Bikram Yoga Studio New Town and this is available in the reception area for you to clean your mats with after class. We also ensure that each hire mat is cleaned and air dried after every use, as well as professionally cleaned on a regular basis.
Separate changing areas are provided for both men and women and these rooms provide plenty of space for changing before and after class. Showers are provided free of charge for your use as well as hair dryers. We offer a towel service for a small fee and sell many drinks, electrolytes and yoga clothes in reception. Our friendly staff are always available to answer any questions – big or small!
You will find plenty of street parking near and around Studio New Town, especially in Montague Street and Forster Street. Arrive a little before class and feel free to relax in our chill out area with the latest magazine or yoga book. We will keep you updated with what is happening within the Bikram Yoga community on a local, national and international level. Don’t forget to check our notice board for up and coming events.
