What is Osteopathy?
OSTEOPATHY is a gentle, holistic therapy that works with the inherent healing mechanisms of the body to promote health within a patient.
What conditions may be helped with Osteopathic treatment
Osteopaths are primary health care providers, meaning you can seek Osteopathic treatment for almost any condition. The most common complaints include:
• Back pain
• Neck and shoulder pain
• Sciatica
• Headache and migraine
• Joint pain and strains – elbows, shoulders, hands, feet, knees, hips etc
• Arthritis relief
• Sinusitis
• Jaw pain
• Postural issues
• Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
• Digestion problems – heartburn, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), constipation
• Asthma and lung issues
• Fertility problems
• Pre and post natal care
• Women’s health – symptoms of Pre-menstrual Tension (PMT), menstrual pain, urinary tract infections etc
And much more! Completion of the 5 year university degree during which anatomy, physiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment is studied (amongst many other subjects) means Osteopaths are able to accurately diagnose and will refer if necessary to a medical practitioner.
What is the history of Osteopathy?
Osteopathy was developed by American physician, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, in 1874. His longstanding criticism of the medical practices of his time led Dr. Still to search for a different method of treatment that not only addressed the symptoms, but also the underlying cause, of the patient’s complaints.
From his extensive study into anatomy, physiology and pathology Dr. Still discovered that the body’s structure is integral to its function and hence treatment should take this into account. He further developed the principles by which all Osteopaths treat;
1. The body is a unit.
The body is one entity, including body, mind and spirit. Everything is connected and changes or strain to one area of the body will affect other areas also. For example, a knee injury can lead to complications and pain within the low back due to altered gait and mechanics of the leg.
2. The body has self-healing and self-regulating mechanisms.
The body has an amazing capacity to heal itself. We all know that if we fall and break the skin, within a few days a scab will have formed, the tissue underneath regenerates and soon we are as good as new. Osteopaths aim to encourage the healing mechanisms and relieve strain that is hindering the body from recovering fully and reaching optimal health.
3. The structure and function of the body are reciprocally interrelated.
If a patient was to injure their back, perhaps due to long-term computer work for example, they may suffer from back pain and discomfort. They may also suffer from shortness of breath, asthma-like symptoms or even heartburn. This is because a change in the structure of the body will affect the function, in this case the function of the lungs and diaphragm. Reciprocally, a problem with the lungs themselves will cause the patient’s breathing to change and hence detrimentally affect the surrounding ribs and muscles.
4. Rational treatment is based upon the above three principles.
What is Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial Osteopathy is very gentle and works to help relieve strains within the body. It was developed by American Osteopath Dr. William Garner Sutherland, who studied the anatomy of the skull and discovered that small movement occurred between the bones of the skull. He also discerned that there is a rhythmic flow within the body as a whole, which when disturbed, led to pain, strains and ill-health. Cranial Osteopaths use very gentle touch to assess this cyclic motion and help relieve any strains that are present.
What may Cranial Osteopathy successfully treat?
Cranial Osteopathy may be used to address any presenting condition (refer above list). It is also commonly sought to address conditions suffered by infants and children, such as:
• recurrent ear infections,
• colic
• reflux
• restless babies
• feeding and suckling problems
• flat spots on the skull
• learning and behavioural difficulties
• special needs children
A common example of why parents seek treatment for their infants is as follows:
A prolonged labour with the infant’s head being engaged for a long time may cause tension through the base of the skull, leading to pressure on the nerves controlling neck musculature, tongue movement and digestion. This may result in an infant who has suckling problems, reflux or even an infant who prefers turning their head one way more than the other. Osteopathic treatment would aim at gently relaxing the tension in the skull and neck, thereby reducing the pressure on the nerves. This, in turn, should ease the symptoms.
Why seek Osteopathic treatment, over other treatment types?
Sunrise Osteopathy offers a gentle, non-invasive treatment that not only takes into account the muscles, or the spine, but rather considers the body as a complete entity. This holistic approach (encompassing a range of techniques, including massage, articulation, Cranial Osteopathy, gentle manipulation and muscle energy techniques), ensures formulation of an individual and specific treatment plan, reflective of both the patient’s needs and wants.
About Dr. Kate Williams.
Kate graduated from RMIT University in 2004 and has spent the intermediate years working for Osteopaths who specialise in the treatment of infants and children. During this time Kate completed courses in Osteopathy in the Cranial Field and in Paediatric Osteopathy, including a trip to Finland in 2010 to study Biodynamic Osteopathy. After travelling and living in Japan for several months, Kate returned home to Bayside Melbourne and commenced work in Black Rock. Late 2008 the opportunity arose to purchase the practice, and Kate is now the proud owner and primary Osteopath at Sunrise Osteopathy.
Kate enjoys treating whole families, from infants to the great grandparents and everyone in between! Her special interest is in the treatment of infants, children and pre and post natal care of mothers. She is undertaking a Graduate Certificate of Infant and Paediatric Manual Therapy at Victoria University this year to further her knowledge and skills in this area.
About Dr. Janelle Capon.
Janelle graduated from RMIT University in 2001. Since completing her studies she has worked in clinics in Melbourne and Brisbane. She was also a part of the teaching team at RMIT and is currently at Victoria University in the osteopathic course. Her work at the universities has been predominantly clinical supervision and assisting in osteopathic practical classes.
She loves the challenge of treating a broad range of conditions and uses a wide variety of osteopathic techniques, tailoring treatment to the individual patient’s needs. She relates well to people of all ages and is interested in the treatment of posture related issues, chronic conditions, general aches and pains, and pregnancy. Janelle is currently studying a postgraduate qualification in paediatric manual therapy through Victoria University.
Janelle has three young children and spends her 'spare time' kicking footballs, dancing around the house and driving the children to all of their activities. Janelle especially loves travelling with her family and seeing the world through her childrens' eyes.
