What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a system of primary health care which has been practised and developed in China and other Asian countries over 2000 years. Differing from other modalities, TCM stresses balance or harmony of the body as key to good health. In Australia, the most popular forms of TCM health care include Chinese acupuncture and herbal medicine.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a safe, effective, natural and increasingly popular form of health care. It is a procedure that stimulates specific points through insertion of fine, sterile needles. Acupuncture works via the meridians which form a closed circuit for energy circulation. The aim of acupuncture is to clear the blockages within the circuit to ensure the normal flow of Qi [energy]. There are over 350 acupuncture points distributed on twenty major meridians including the Lungs, Large Intestine, Stomach, Spleen, Heart, Small Intestine, Urinary Bladder, Kidneys, Liver and Gall Bladder.

Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine involves selection of single herbs or traditional herbal formulations that matches and treats individual health problems. It takes a holistic approach to understand normal functions and disease processes, and focuses as much on the prevention of illness as on the treatment.

FAQ
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into certain sites of the skin [acupuncture points] to encourage the normal flow of Qi [energy] and to restore the body’s balance. Clinically, acupuncture is often combined with cupping, moxibustion, massage and electro-stimulation.

What can acupuncture do?
  • Relaxes the muscles and provides drug-free pain relief
  • Treats the symptoms as well as the underlying cause of disease
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Increases energy and soothes the mind
  • Helps in the prevention against illness and maintenance of general wellbeingAcupuncture is known to treat a wide range of disorders including musculoskeletal conditions such as lower back pain, sciatica, arthritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and neck pain, neurological conditions such as headaches, insomnia, Bell’s palsy and stroke, digestive system disorders such as toothache, constipation, diarrhoea, weight control and liver and gallbladder conditions, gynaecological disorders such as PMS, absence of periods, hormonal disturbance and menopausal symptoms, and skin conditions such as eczema, acne and psoriasis.

What are the needles like? Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are made of stainless steel wire. They are pre-sterilised and disposable. Needles vary in length and width and are selected according to the site to be needled and the severity of disease. Acupuncture DOES NOT hurt since the needles are extremely fine and sharp. After a needle is inserted and manipulated, patients should experience numbness, distension, soreness or electrical tingling. These feelings are called De Qi [the arrival of Qi].

    Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture treatment is safe. It may give rise to mild side-effects including discomfort at the sites of needle insertion, bruising, nausea and dizziness during or after treatment. There are no known significant adverse events for this ancient therapy.

Is it covered by private health insurance?
In Australia, acupuncture is covered by the majority of private health insurance. The amount of rebate varies and thus you need to check with your insurance companies.

    Far Infrared Therapy Unit
Far-infrared (FIR) radiation therapy has been widely used for clinical rehabilitation and treatment worldwide. Due to its unique characteristics, FIR rays generate a type of heat/energy which possesses remarkable therapeutic effect and can be more readily absorbed by human bodies. Recent studies reveal FIR radiation therapy has the ability to improve micro-circulation, enhance immunity, accelerate tissue growth and wound healing, enhance metabolic function and normalise the nervous system.

    Clinical application
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Prostatitis
  • DM foot
  • Bedsore
  • Arthritis
  • Myalgia
  • Lower back pain and many other disorders

    Why far infrared?
In clinical practice, TCM practitioners often use an infrared or heat lamp as a supplemental to amplify the therapeutic effect of acupuncture. These instruments can generate excessive amount of heat and cause skin burn and discomfort. Now with the innovative FIR therapy unit, the energy or heat only gently elevates the topical temperature so the users would not experience discomfort or side effects. FIR is also better in penetrating deep into the body and is more readily absorbed, in comparison with traditional heat lamps.

    Supplement information
  • The power density of far-infrared is less than 30mW/cm² and thus it is completely safe.
  • No risk of cross-infection as the device does not directly contact with the skin.
