Sydney Osteopathy & Chiropractic Centre

Welcome to Sydney Osteopathy & Chiropractic Centre

Hi, my name is Sheldon Caines, Remedial Therapist at Sydney Osteopathy & Chiropractic Centre centrally located in the heart of Bondi Junction. Originally from Canada, I’ve been residing in Bondi since 2003 with my wife Victoria. Living on the East Coast of Australia is therapeutic itself!

A little about myself; I am diploma qualified & registered in the disciplines of Remedial Massage, Fitness, Elite Athlete Support & have completed courses in clinical, correctional & rehabilitative exercise. I have also worked locally as a fitness specialist & currently provide therapist services to elite sporting teams such as the South Sydney Rabbitohs through JRM Australia.

Prior to my arrival in Sydney I competed in athletics for many years at a representative level. During my time as an athlete I had the misfortune of repetitive injury, it was around this time that I developed a keen interest in the application of remedial therapies in respect to rehabilitation. Since then I have made every endeavour to educate myself in this field with a specific focus on preventative and post injury rehabilitation.

I firmly believe a balanced lifestyle precedes a healthy lifestyle. Our physical state is unique to the lives we live as individuals, customised treatment is essential. As a practitioner I take great pride in providing quality treatment. As such, my services are fully endorsed by all major health funds & registered with the Australian Traditional Medicine Society and Fitness Australia, Australia’s leading industry associations respectively.

Whether you’re experiencing pain, stress or recovering from injury massage has something to offer everyone.

Please feel free to contact me to arrange an appointment.

Yours in health,

Sheldon Caines

Services

Deep tissue massage is appropriate when chronic muscle tension is built up over time, as seen in occupations involving prolonged periods of sitting or standing. This form of massage is generally area specific, focusing on the release of deeply held patterns within the muscle. On average the sedentary individual will spend more than two thirds of their time in a fixed position, working and sleeping. Posture & support cannot be stressed enough.

Deep tissue massage involves direct pressure to loosen muscle tissue, alleviate pain & discomfort, promote circulation & reduce adhesions which can impair nerve function. Much like unaccustomed exercise, one can expect a level of tenderness following deep tissue massage. Discomfort is often mild and usually subsides within 48 hours.

Remedial massage involves the use of various techniques to aid in the breakdown of scar tissue & eliminates muscle spasm. Problematic areas involving soft tissue are typically caused by injury, repetitive strain & poor posture.

Remedial massage is beneficial when pain, muscular dysfunction & restriction of movement are present. Tension within the muscles is built up over time resulting in adhesion, impairing the contractile nature of the tissue. Friction techniques help break these adhesions down resulting in an increased range of motion & improved circulation which is nutritionally vital to the health of the muscle.

Remedial massage is best complimented by remedial exercise, focusing on the stretching and strengthening of weak & imbalanced areas to reduce the occurrence of injury and improve function of movement.

Sport massage enhances performance & in the world of social & competitive sport it’s ideal. Sport massage is appropriate before, after & during any sporting activity. During vigorous activity metabolic wastes are produced & nutritionally depleted muscle tissue may be in need of repair. Post event massage assists in the removal of these wastes and improves general circulation providing oxygen rich blood & nutrients essential for recovery.

Sport massage is a specialised form of treatment & when used as an integral part of training allows the athlete to perform at higher intensities with a reduced risk of injury & an increased quality in post event recovery vital to effective training.

Injury rehabilitation. The main objective of injury rehabilitation is to reverse the effects of immobilisation. Immobilisation plays a crucial role in recovery, however, following an injury range of motion, strength & endurance are significantly reduced.

Massage therapy has proven to show significant results in the management of soft tissue injuries. Massage introduces passive & active movement early in the rehabilitative process to encourage mobilisation which has a positive effect on ligaments, tendons, muscles and prevents scarring within & around the joint.

Myofascial release. Fascia can be described as a thin layer of tissue which resembles a spider’s web extending from head to feet covering every muscle, nerve, artery, bone, organ & cell in the human body.

Poor posture, accidents & surgery can cause the muscles to tighten. As a result the fascia becomes dehydrated and restrictive, forcing the body to become unbalanced. Myofascial techniques separate the binding fascia which releases restrictions & encourages hydration & realignment.

Trigger point therapy. Trigger points can be defined as highly irritable localised spots within skeletal muscle. Poor posture & sedentary lifestyle are powerful activators of trigger points. Most commonly described as tiny “lumps”, trigger points can be classified as either latent or active.

Active trigger points refer pain, often numbness & tingling to other parts of the body when touched, latent trigger points are not sensitive to touch & do not refer pain, however, the presence of latent trigger points can lead to increased stiffness within the muscle.

Trigger point therapy involves applying direct pressure to affected areas to relieve pain & dysfunction locally & to referring areas.

Flexibility. An individual’s flexibility can be influenced by a number of internal & external factors ranging from age, occupation, environment & stage of injury recovery. The main purpose of flexibility training is to increase a joints range of motion, reduce tightness & correct postural imbalances which affect the body’s natural alignment.

Many injuries occur in both hypo & hyper mobile individuals. A gymnast required to hyper extend their limbs to perform an action runs the risk of injury. Likewise, an action requiring a minimum range of movement could prove hazardous to the less supple individual.

Flexibility training is highly customised with each method as specific as the individual themselves.
