Energy Moves

Tai Chi works on three aspects; that of the body, the mind and the energy system.

Tai Chi is one of the few disciplines where young and old can practice together,
where, as you get older you can continue to improve your skill in all aspects and
levels, whether as a martial art, or for health.

Tai Chi

Tai chi is an extensive and comprehensive art form encompassing many different styles, ideas and ways of practicing - some ways slow, others fast, using low or high postures. Some say it is a martial art, while others practice for health or relaxation. With so many variations and at times seemingly opposite approaches, the question is what is tai chi?

The answer doesn't necessarily lie in the outer look, although there are certain qualities that do appear externally to the trained eye. There is one thing that threads or connects all of the different aspects together and that is its principles.

The same principles are the basis for many other facets of traditional chinese culture. Including chinese medicine, architecture, feng shui, calligraphy, and brushwork. Dating back 5000 years they can be found in the Yellow Emperors Classic on Internal Medicine (Nei Jing).

The taoists believe that all phenomena conform to and abide by the law of tao. The tao being the principle of all existence or life itself. The dynamic of this existence is constant change and variation, created by the continuous interaction of two opposing forces called yin and yang. Being healthy, in chinese medical theory, means that the forces of yin and yang within the body are in a well balanced state. Disturb the balance and illness occurs. From a health perspective, the aim of tai chi is to restore and maintain this balance.

If we can learn to be open to and accept whatever conditions arise in our lives we
create the conditions for a state of balance within constant change. Through this we
learn to become adaptable and flexible ensuring healthy, happy lives, with the ability
to tap into our maximum potential.
Tony Ward

Through the daily practice of forms and partner work, we cultivate our awareness, sensitivity and balance, which transforms the way we move, stand, act and interact in all aspects of our life. And as we develop and refine the principles we can create a state of aliveness - physically, energetically and spiritually.

Tai chi is about the relationship with your environment, with those around you and probably most importantly with yourself. Some students describe the feeling when they start to realise the principles as something familiar, like a coming home.

Tai chi is one of the few disciplines where young and old can practice together, where, as you get older you can continue to improve your skill in all aspects and levels, whether as a martial art, for health. It only requires an attitude of genuine enquiry, patience and perseverance.

The principles of the art, although simple, are truly profound. The method as relayed clearly in the classics, has been developed and passed from teacher to student through countless generations. Tai chi has survived the test of time. The principles are as relevant and powerful today, because they work.

Bowen Therapy

Bowen is a theraputic technique used to tap into the body's ability to self-heal.Bowen gently stimulates the nervous system, to bring about balance to the muscular structure of the body, in turn helping to align the bones.

In addition, Bowen influences all systems, including the cardiovascular, hormonal, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive system and balances your emotions.

Emmett Technique

Emmett Technique can give dramatic results for first time clients. The sequence of muscle activation points can unlock muscle memory. This activation gives the brain the opportunity to set up a new state of homeostasis and provides an opportunity for re-alignment of the body.

By finding the initial activator that created the neuro-muscular problem, light pressure sequences are then used to release these problem areas and the result can be an almost instantaneous result.

Dorn Spinal Therapy

Dorn Spinal Therapy is a German specialised back care treatment based on balancing and aligning the entire spine for the well being of chronic ailments. It is a gentle alternative to chiropractic treatment, it corrects leg lengths, hips rotations, back, neck, jaw, shoulder joints , visual and digestive problems, addresses headaches, sciatica, infertility, PMS, ear aches, tinnitus, vertigo, asthma, high blood pressure.

The treatment works within the dynamics and the cooperation of the client and thus in a natural human flow of movement. The patient swings either arm, leg or turns the head to soften mobility of the vertebrae or joints as the therapist works. Because there is no sudden impact, energy lines and body fluids are not being compressed, thus the body experiences no shock. The treatment is safe as no blood clots can be released due to too sudden overstretching of tissue structure.

The patient will feel a strengthening overtime of of their skeletal structure as old emotional and physical blocks fall away. A soothing theraputic massage is also available to complement the Dorn treatment.

Yoke's power of healing is complemented with the chi /energy work . Through her long years of tai chi training, she has naturally developed intuitive skills of sensitivity and awareness which promotes the healing process.

These therapies are non invasive, gentle and relaxing can be offered alone or as an adjunct to the tai chi training.

Chin Kham Yoke

A Malaysian born Chinese, began studying tai chi in the yang tradition of Master Cheng Man Ching in the early seventies with teachers in Taiwan and later in Japan. In 1986 Yoke was recommended to Master Huang Sheng Shyan, a significant figure in the tai chi world. Master Huang would often express absolute joy and playfulness when demonstrating his extraordinary skills in the art. He embraced tai chi with his entire being.

For Yoke the immense stature, integrity and vision of Master Huang's tai chi was a powerful inspiration and provided a strong direction. From 1986-1992 until his death, she was admitted into Master Huang's school, participated in his workshops in Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore and trained intensively under him.

From 1976-1991, Yoke lived and taught tai chi in Kyoto, Tokyo and Hofu, Japan and at the same time embarking in research and professional studies in the ancient arts of Japanese dance and of Noh drama. Yoke highlighted the significance of the role of tai chi principles on movement arts and other related art forms. She sought to challenge, explore and create from classical roots of eastern movement philosophy in her own dance choreography.

In 1992 Yoke returned to Sydney, bringing with her a new climate of change in the Australian performing environment and, between 1992-1999 received funding by the Australian Performing Arts Council and various other major funding bodies, at home and abroad. This not only gave Yoke the support to bring tai chi philosophy and principles into eastern movement discipline in theatre and dance practices of her own performances and choreography. It also allowed her a platform to introduce it to performance and dance studies in institutions, at universities, in performance forums, festival workshops from within the country and on international performing tours.

The appeal of an art object, an extraordinary piece of music or a performer's virtuoso performance can exhibit tai chi principles in practice. The presence of stillness in movement, natural poise and balance, fluidity, aliveness and refinement of the skills is the magic of the appeal. To arouse, sincerely embody and develop these qualities in everyday living is the essence and spirit of the art of tai chi.
Chin Kham Yoke

From 1996 Sydney, Yoke joined Tony Ward, principal of Tai Chi Works, and now teaches in Tai Chi Works. The school has expanded to include workshops in Europe and Japan.

Testimonials

"I have had two Bowen /Emmett Treatments with Yoke Chin. I recommend her Bowen/Emmett Treatments without reservation. I found the treatments very effective, relaxing and very gentle. I had a pain in my right hip when I lifted my leg, I have had it for about 3 days and it was getting to the point where I couldn't lift my leg. As soon as I got off the massage table after Yoke's treatment it was 70% better and within two days it was completely gone. As well as that improvement I found I could turn my neck to the right further than I have been able to for years.
Also I experienced a release of very long held tension in my right hip which i had been struggling for a long time.
I am very grateful to Yoke and encourage anyone who has not experienced the benefit of her treatment to try it. I am sure you will be very satisfied as I am.
Your's Sincerely,

Tod Thompson Spinologist

"I have been taking lessons with Yoke for the past 9 weeks. In that time I have noticed positive changes in myself and my body. Tai-chi very gently and with great subtlety encourages an improvement in posture and a stillness in mind. My work as a therapist and kinesiologist has benefited by my greater awareness and presence. Yoke's patience, presence and enthusiasm for the art is an inspiration.

Sincerely,"

Marilyn Swidler

"I came to Sydney from Canada 18 years ago with a MFA in Fine arts at the Tasmanian School of Art. 5 -6 years ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and almost from the very beginning I have been getting Bowen/Emmett treatments from Yoke, which I believe has saved my life in so many ways. My doctor (Specialist) has remarked how wonderful my state of health has been over such a long time. A lot of Parkinson's sufferers descend into a deep illness fairly quickly I have, I believe by Yoke's care and good practices of the bowen method, maintained a balance and positive state of mind and a functioning body. I am still able to paint and work to my satisfaction."
Paul Miller

"Being in an office job and working in front of a computer all day, my neck and upper back regularly became stiff and sore It often left me feeling tired and tense by the end of the day. So, I really looked forward to attending Yoke's Tai Chi classes as I always walk out feeling re-energized with a real sense of well being .I also find the neck and upper back became more mobile after the class. The resullts had encouraged me to try Yoke's Bowen/Emmett treatments which complemented the Tai Chi. In the past, I have tried other traditional treatments such as chiropractic, physiotherapy, deep tissue massage and yoga. But I have found Yoke's Tai Chi and Bowen/Emmett treatment the most effective in releasing the tension from my body. It has really improved my quality of life, because I can now do more with less effort. Thanks, Yoke! "
