What Is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a holistic approach to healthcare capable of addressing many musculoskeletal conditions. Using “hands on” techniques Osteopaths treat the body as a whole including muscles, joints, ligaments, bone and connective tissue.
Osteopaths believe the effective functioning of the body is closely related to the body’s framework. Using this style of treatment the function of the entire body is improved including the lymphatic, circulatory and nervous systems. An Osteopath optimizes the structure so that the body can heal itself.
Within an osteopathic treatment a range of techniques are employed meet the individual needs of the patient. Prior to osteopathic treatment, a comprehensive medical history is taken. Such treatments may include soft tissue massage, manipulation, stretching and joint mobilization. Treatment may also include advice on both stretching and strengthening exercises, posture, diet, ergonomics and stress management techniques.
An Osteopath undertakes 5 years of full time training to become a Government registered
practitioner of manual therapy.
Fitness Pilates Classes And Rehabilitation
Take2health offers clinical Pilates classes. Our classes are developed and modified in accordance with current research. Pilates aims to stabilise and control the smaller, deeper muscles of the pelvis, back and shoulders. By doing this we are correcting the brain patterns for muscle activity therefore reducing muscle fatigue.
Less muscle fatigue means greater postural control. Classes also focus on effective breathing and controlled movement in order to limit the stress on the body. Pilates helps individuals to lengthen and tone their muscles whilst limiting the risk of injury by ensuring efficiency of movement.
Individual rehabilitation sessions for those who are unable to participate in a class are available.
One on one rehabilitation sessions ensure the immediate ans long term needs of the patient are met.
A rehabilitation session includes extensive physical assessment and instruction as well as the preparation of an individual program for you to take home. This form of Pilates is best suited for those with complex musculoskeletal problems or those unable to attend a regular class setting.
Do I Need A Referral?
No, in most cases a referral is not required to see an Osteopath. Patients with chronic conditions however, may be referred for osteopathic treatment by their general practitioner with the Government initiative under Medicare plus.
All other major private health funds will cover a portion of your osteopathic treatment providing you have ancillary or ‘extras” cover. Patients who are currently insured by Workers Compensation, T.A.C and Department of Veteran’s Affairs are able to claim treatment by an osteopath.

Osteopathy And Children
Osteopathy provides a competent, caring and gentle approach to the treatment of children. This treatment style makes it suitable for children of all ages including new born infants. There are a number of causes of structural problems in children. Such factors include difficulties during the pregnancy or birth, childhood accidents and falls, infection as well as genetic disorders.
Problems that affect the proper mobility and function of the bodys framework can lead to a variety of conditions.
These include:
- Postural problems such as scoliosis
- Respiratory problems such as asthma
- Birth trauma can cause pressure in the infants
- skull which affects feeding and sleeping patterns
- Delayed physical or intellectual progress which may in turn lead to behavioral or learning disabilities
- Recurrent infections including throat, ear and urinary tract
- Gastric difficulties such as wind and reflux
Prior to any treatment, a full case history and complete examination of the child is undertaken. This ensures that osteopathic treatment is the appropriate course of action for the child and that there is no need for a referral. Gentle techniques are used to identify areas of the body where the child’s structure may have been disturbed. Osteopathy recognizes a child’s natural ability to heal. Your osteopath will assist, accelerate and guide this natural healing process.
