AYURVEDA THERAPY and NUTRITION
What is Ayurveda?
More than simply a health care system, Ayurveda offers a philosophy whereby one may prevent unnecessary suffering and live a long healthy life.
Known as the ‘mother’ of all medical systems Ayurveda has undergone continuous research, development and refinement over the past 5,000 years.
Originally from India, Ayurveda is currently experiencing a world wide popularity as a revival is sweeping through all continents.
Ayurveda employs the application of nutritional guidance, herbal medicines, exercise therapy and many special rejuvenation and purification therapies. Preferring to focus on the type of person who has an ailment rather than just understanding the type of illness the person has, Ayurveda is a patient orientated system of healing. Inherent in Ayurvedic principles is the concept that you are capable of taking charge of you own life and healing.
As per Ayurveda, the individual body is composed of the five Mahabhoutas (Elements), namely; Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. In the body these Five Elements are explained in terms of the three Doshas - Vata, Pita and Kapha Energies (the five elements condensing to three Doshas). Ayurveda also recognises seven Dhatus (Body Tissues) and the three Malas (Body Wastes) all common to humans, animals and plants.
Vata, Pitta and Kapha govern our entire physical structure and function. Vata governs movement, Pitta is concerned with functions of heat, metabolism and energy production and Kapha governs physical structure and fluid balance. Thus in Ayurveda, illness is viewed as a state of imbalance in one or more of these Doshas. Treatments aim to establish the equilibrium of these three fundamental qualities.
Ayurveda recognises that everyone has their own unique constitution which requires individual diet, health and lifestyle practices. Knowing your own constitution thus allows you to understand the workings of your mind and body better.
With guidance, anyone can learn Ayurveda’s practical self-healing to promote happiness, health, creativity and longevity.

Ayurvedic Routine
Living an Ayurvedic lifestyle is not complicated. Making healthy choices in our daily life by removing the causes of imbalances and paying attention to our needs is easy and beneficial on a daily basis.
According to the Principles of Ayurveda you can achieve health through daily routine. A typical, daily Ayurvedic routine might look like this:
Morning:
- Here comes the sun!
- Smile, this is the most peaceful time of the day!
- Before you put your feet on the floor spend a few minutes thinking about your day and being grateful for your life as it is given. Meditate!
- Wake up and get out of bed with the sunrise.
- Drink a glass of room temperature water.
- Splash your face and eyes with water.
- Brush your teeth and scrape your tongue.
- Self body massage (Abhyanga). 5 minutes is sufficient to increase vitality. Move, move move!
- Exercise a little by doing Yoga and breathing exercises.
- Spend some time connecting with something that gives you strength.
- Eat a nutritional breakfast.
Noon:
- Make lunch the main meal of the day!
It is when your internal fire is able to digest most of the food. Eating foods, spices and herbs according to your constitution and body type is the first step in Ayurvedic teaching to achieve harmony with yourself and nature.
- How about some Ginger Tea to enhance digestion.
- Eat peacefully with positive thoughts.
- Chew your food well.
- Be grateful for the food.
- Don’t eat at your desk.
- Walk a little bit to assist digestion.
Sundown:
- Listen to some good music.
- Read a good book.
- Help someone.
- Have friends around.
- Have a light meal at night!
- Go to bed early! To relax and have a sound sleep why not massage the soles of your feet?
- Go to sleep with a clear mind!
If all of this is new to you, pick one or two suggestions that seem easy and incorporate them until it feels natural. After they become part of your daily life, come back and choose a few more until you are more closely aligned with nature’s rhythms and cycles. Developing a lifestyle in sync with daily and seasonal rhythms will ensure a higher quality of life.
