Japanese Toyohari acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Medicinal Leech Therapy

What is Toyohari Acupuncture?

The Toyohari style of acupuncture is a gentle and effective form of meridian therapy.
It was developed in Japan by the renowned blind acupuncturist Kodo Fukushima from an earlier acupuncture style.

Toyohari has it's roots in classical Chinese acupuncture and uses the same acupuncture points and meridians with gentle, less invasive techniques.

The theory of Toyohari is based on century old classical Chinese medical texts but in practice, innovative new techniques and instruments are used. These include needles made from different metals such as silver and gold, specialised tools and various forms of moxibustion heat therapy.

During moxibustion the herb mugwort is burned to radiate long wave infra- red heat into the body. This exerts a strong anti- inflammatory and immune boosting effect.

A Toyohari treatment has two aspects, firstly the ‘root treatment’ focuses on boosting the patient’s energy level to enhance the body’s self healing mechanisms as well as calming the nervous system. The principle of balancing the energy “ki” through the traditional five element system is applied here.
Secondly the ‘branch treatment’ focuses on the treatment of symptoms. Techniques used range from inserted and non- inserted acupuncture, moxibustion, suction cupping and the use of polarity devices.

MEDICINAL LEECH THERAPY

This form of therapy involves the application of medicinal leeches to the body surface to take advantage of a number of medicinal effects.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The medicinal effect of leeches can be attributed to the active components in the leech’s saliva, the best known being hirudin, a powerful anticoagulant. Besides hirudin, 14 other active ingredients in the saliva exert anaesthetic, anti- inflammatory, vasodilating and antibiotic effects. The combination of extraction of stagnant blood combined with the bioactive saliva produces a profound long lasting effect on diseased areas. For example: study data suggests that a treatment of arthrosis of the knee requires one leech therapy session every six month to significantly reduce pain.
