Hypnosis


WHAT IS HYPNOSIS

Hypnosis is a state of mind produced by either yourself (auto or self Hypnosis) or by responding to the directions of a therapist. It is usually accompanied by deep physical relaxation, a focusing of your attention within yourself and a corresponding reduction in awareness of your surroundings.

Hypnosis has been likened to day dreaming and naturally occurring forms of hypnotic trance are common ie when absorbed in a good book or some other activity, or driving on autopilot down a familiar road.

Hypnosis in not the same as sleep it is not like an anaesthetic you do not “pass out” and you are not unconscious when you are hypnotised. You do not lose control over your mind or your feelings, you do not weaken or surrender your will to any other person. In fact, your will power may be strengthened with Hypnosis.

Within the subconscious mind resides our emotions, memories, imagination, our automatic body responses, habit patterns, and our most deeply held beliefs about ourselves and what we believe is possible for us.

It is these deeply held patterns and beliefs that drive our decisions and shape our lives and the quality of our perceptions. When we desire to make a lasting positive change in our lives it is these subconscious patterns that we must change.

Hypnotherapy is a safe, proven, and effective tool for directly accessing the power of the subconscious mind. As with the majority of the healing arts and sciences, the practice of Hypnotherapy has evolved and changed over the course of its lengthy history.

Modern Hypnotherapy is a collaborative effort wherein the client and Hypnotherapist interact and work together, via the pleasant and naturally occurring phenomena we have labelled “Trance” (the same state that everyone experiences while awakening from a good nights sleep) to bring about the positive changes that the client has identified as desirable, and to achieve lasting improvement in the quality of the clients life.

HOW IT WORKS

The Hypnotherapists role is to guide the clients awareness into the part of the subconscious mind where change can take place. This method requires a dedicated team effort, with the client accepting responsibility for his or her own recovery through co-operation and commitment to the process.

Hypnotherapy is relatively quick in comparison to other forms of therapy as it is able to access where the issues really are, that is, in your subconscious mind and bring about effective permanent emotional and physical healing.

WHAT CAN HYPNOSIS BE USED FOR?
  • Releasing and managing stress, anxiety, panic or depression
  • Learning or increasing relaxation
  • Controlling pain of all kinds – learning self-hypnosis is a large part of this
  • Giving up habits like smoking, alcohol, drugs, gambling, nail biting, grinding teeth etc
  • Weight changed – slimming, increasing or body shaping
  • Overcoming sleep difficulties or insomnia
  • Overcoming fears and phobias like heights, elevators, water, needles, insects etc
  • Developing self-esteem and / or self-confidence

While I give a list of illnesses and issues which hypnotherapy can deal with effectively, I also explain to each client that I personally prefer to work holistically.

By that I mean that I believe that the mind is very powerful and can create disharmony in our mental, emotional and physical bodies. This disharmony is created to signal to the individual that something needs to change - often negative beliefs, behaviour patterns and ways of thinking.

When the client understands this concept, both client and hypnotherapist can work most effectively together to tackle the root cause of the problem presenting.

The issue presenting, no matter what that is, I feel is merely a symptom (actually, I see symptoms as gifts) from your physical, mental or emotional bodies, allowing you an opportunity to heal at the deepest level.

If you believe that illness, accidents and disorders are relevant only to the physical self, you are disassociating yourself from your mental, emotional and spiritual aspects, thereby refusing to acknowledge the majority of what makes you who you really are.

I love working with people who are open to looking within for their answers and who are prepared to take responsibility for their health, both mental and physical.

By that I mean that they are willing to explore how their old ways of thinking and being in the world, may be contributing to the symptom they are seeking help with.

When this happens, the subconscious mind finds a way to heal at the level of understanding, responsibility and willingness shown by the client.

HYPNOSIS MYTHS

Stage Hypnotists, sensational news stories and gossip has lead many people to believe that when you are Hypnotised you are under someone else’s control. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you are Hypnotised you are just really relaxed and focused.

Anytime a person wants to, they could get up and walk away. Most people experience Hypnosis as a pleasant feeling of deep relaxation. In trance you will not do or say anything contrary to your conscious wishes, behaviour or morality.

Going into a trance is not the same as being asleep. You are not asleep, you can be aware of everything around you, just like meditation. You are quite capable of bringing yourself out of trance or rejecting the suggestions, that is why, you need to consciously want the changes.

Hypnosis is very different to what you may have learned from the TV and really can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do.


NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING


NLP is a science developed in the early 70’s, by Richard Bandler, a student of psychology, and John Grinder, a Professor of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

They studied three top therapists Fritz Perls, originator of Gestalt Therapy, Virginia Satir, innovative Family Therapist, and Dr. Milton Erickson, world famous Hypnotherapist.

Their goal was to find out how they produced such excellent results and create a model out of it so the excellence could be replicated.

Since then, many others have contributed to the growth and development of the field, but this is where the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming originated.

From these models came a host of techniques for accelerating human change by changing thought patterns, strategies, beliefs and decisions that previously may have been limiting.

NLP is the study of the brain (Neuro) how we use language internally and externally (Linguistic) to produce specific behaviours (Programs).

NLP is a collection of beliefs which leave behind a trail of techniques and processes.


Past Life (Regression) Therapy


Regression is the experience of going back to an earlier time. "Past life regression" involves the re-experiencing of a previous lifetime.

Regression can be a very vivid and realistic experience involving two or more of your senses (for example, vision, hearing and physical sensations)

At other times, regression can be more subtle, involving relatively vague images and feelings.

Usually when you undergo regression, you can expect to at least access enough information to allow for an interesting and useful experience.

Some people recall a vivid past life in their first session, while others will get some impressions – some images, thoughts or feelings which can lead to a fuller past-life experience in a later session.

Past life regression can be beneficial in healing emotional issues in this lifetime, where there is no apparent cause for the presenting problem. Phobias are a great example of this. An irrational fear that cannot be explained in this lifetime, often has its roots in a past life.

It is the hypnotherapist's skills that can help maximise the healing potential of these experiences.

It's also possible to experience the in-between life state - the state between leaving one lifetime and being born into another. This is a frequent experience can be an extremely useful source of self-knowledge, inspiration and healing.
