Ayurvedic Consultation:
Initial consultation usually takes 90 minutes and costs $90. In this first visit, Dr. Sharma tells the patient which particular “dosha” or “doshas” in the body are out of balance. A “dosha” is like a mechanism in the body that regulates the wind, heat and water. So for example, if someone is suffering arthritis, the “Pitta (or Fire) Dosha” is disturbed and this causes inflammation and pain. By removing the excess toxins that are disturbing the Pitta Dosha, the body returns to its healthy, balanced state.
Ayurvedic Treatments:
Dr. Sharma is trained in Keraliya Panchakarma. In this form of therapy, balance within the body is brought about by five main detoxification treatments.
Snehana usually precedes all these treatments. Snehana - A ghee (clarified butter) or medicated oil is given for several mornings to soften doshas. Then the following treatments take place depending on the health condition:
1. Abhyangam - A full body massage with a herbal, therapeutic oil and poultice. The poultice containing herbs have pain relieving, anti arthritic and anti-inflammatory effects.
2. Shirodhara - ”Shiro” means head and “Dhara” is a stream, thus Shirodhara is the continuous stream of warm oil or decoctions on the forehead to profoundly relax the nervous system and balance Prana Vata.
3. Kativasti and Pichu - Special Ayurvedic oil treatments for joint damage, spinal fusion, disc prolapse and lower back pain.
4. Swedana - Sweat TreatmentsAyurvedic herbs open the channels in the body to get rid of impurities through sweat glands.
5. Nasya (Nasal administration of medicine) - The nose is the doorway to the brain and it is also the doorway to consciousness. Thus Nasya, is indicated for prana disorders, sinus congestion, hay fever, migraine headaches, certain hair, eye and ear problems. This treatment decreases accumulated Kapha (mucous) build up in the head.
Duration of Treatment:
A program plan is outlined during the initial consultation. Each Shirodhara treatment is approximately two and half hours. For more serious conditions, Shirodhara treatment every day for 7-28 days is recommended.
Concessions:
Student and pensioner concessions are available. Services are covered by most major health funds.
QUALIFICATION DETAILS
Dr. Vanita Sharma has a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), after completeing a full-time, 6 year university course in Chandigarh (Punjab University), India. She also has a post graduate diploma in Naturopathy and Yoga.
Dr. Sharma has treated over 10,000 patients, many of whom were suffering serious chronic illnesses. In India, she was considered a great healer and revered in her community. Since coming to Australia four years ago, she has discovered that there’s a great need for Ayurveda here. While Western medicine treats the symptoms of disease, only Ayurvedic Medicine removes the root cause of illness leaving the patient happy and healthy. Both chronic and acute illnesses can be overcome with Ayurvedic treatments.
