It is sad that many children and families suffer needlessly, not with severe illness but with constant, frequent illnesses that over a year amount to much misery, down time, and disruption to family life.
Often it is simply a breathing problem. We know it as dysfunctional breathing, parents know it as asthma, frequent coughing, allergies, blocked or runny nose, throat, chest or ear infections. The child might snore heavily, sleep restlessly or appear to stop breathing for a few seconds several times a night. Concentration may be poor, behaviour erratic.
Sometimes it can be induced as it was for one young soccer player. The cold night air breathed mostly through his mouth caused him to cough constantly and wheeze frequently. It dried his airways necessitating protective mucous production, it affected his tonsils and produced both a blocked and runny nose. In short it produced his asthma symptoms. The result was a merry-go-round of puffers, antibiotics and steroids with days off school and slow growth. Within a week of commencing corrective breathing training, he was playing a game of soccer without his puffer, without mouth breathing, and without coughing. In fact he was the only one, according to his parents filming at a soccer camp, who was not coughing!
Snoring and sleep apnoea are breathing problems. Listen to your children, listen to their breathing, watch them sleeping. Are they restless, are they snoring, do they wet the bed or get up to the toilet? Are they getting peaceful, restful, uninterrupted sleep? If not then growth will be affected, their ability to concentrate will be affected and so will their moods. A child’s posture, tongue position and swallowing patterns will also be affected. This may result in the development of a narrow face, narrow palate and crowded teeth.
Buteyko breathing training allowed him and Sarah to live as children are meant to live, without the need for medication. This has to be good for any child. Medication carries risks and the less we need to rely on it the better, especially for children.
It doesn’t have to be this way. You can breathe your way to better health.
