What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine which recognises the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions. Trauma can disrupt normal inter-relationships between the musculo-skeletal, nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. The osteopath reasons that if the body becomes restricted in an area, then there are adverse affects to health flowing on as the body attempts to compensate and adapt around these problems. This eventually leads to the body feeling stiffness, inflammation and pain.

Osteopathic treatments are thus individually tailored, with 'hands on' techniques to the physical body ie. the joints, muscles and connective tissues. The aim is to normalise the body's structural abnormalities by removing obstructions to health, improving nerve function and blood supply and giving capacity for the body to heal.

Techniques generally include a combination of stretching and massage of muscles; mobilisation or manipulation of specific joints; fascial unwinding and / or osteopathy in the cranial field.

What is Osteopathy in the Cranial Field?

Cranial Osteopathy has a gentle approach. The osteopath feels a subtle, rhythmic shape change that is present in all tissues of the body, called involuntary motion. With increased tension in the body from trauma or stress, this motion can be disrupted and upsets the body's natural ability to heal. In order to restore normal function, the Osteopath gently applies a precise amount of force to promote movement of fluids. This releases the compressed bones and joints, relieving strain patterns. Most people experience a feeling of relaxation or flow of fluids during treatment. Cranial Osteopathy is an ideal solution for the treatment of newborns and children.

Is Osteopathic treatment safe?

Yes. There is much scientific research that validates osteopathic techniques. For further information please visit www.osteopathic.com.au
