What is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise regime developed by Joseph H Pilates in the 1920's.
He designed a series of mat exercises that were aimed at building abdominal strength and mind/body control. Pilates then built various pieces of equipment to enhance the results of his expanding repertoire of exercises. Years ahead of his time, he viewed fitness holistically, emphasising the body working as a whole unit.
Pilates is a unique form of exercise that uses stretching and strengthening movements to transform your body.
It strengthens and tones muscles, improves posture and balance and creates longer, leaner muscles. Pilates is deisgned to work the body's deepest muscles, creating a strong core without the pain associated with conventional exercise.
With pilates, there is no jarring impact or ripping of muscle tissue.
Most exercise regimes focus on developing the superficial muscles of the body and the end result is bulky, stiff muscles.
Pilates on the other hand, focuses on the smaller, intrinsic muscles, heightening their efficiency and combining grace of movement with strength.
Pilates classes are performed on specialised, spring-based equipment that develops core strength and flexibility. The body is toned, aligned and strengthened.
Pilates will transform the way your body looks and feels. You will see dramatic changes in your body's shape and size as your muscles tighten around the belly, butt and thigh areas. As a general rule, clients who work out 2-3 times a week will see great results in a short time.
Pilates suits a wide range of ages and levels of fitness. From the elite athlete to those requiring rehabilitation.
