What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is "holistic manual medicine" which emphasises the human body's ability to regulate and repair itself given optimum structure, nutrition and environmental conditions. Developed by a 19th century American physician, Dr Andrew Taylor Still, osteopathy draws strongly from the relationship between our anatomical structure and our physiological function.
Osteopathy could be described in simple, lay terms as "holistic manual medicine". Osteopathy is a system of health care that focuses on diagnosis and treatment of the physical body’s structure in order to optimise physiological functioning. Manual palpation and Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) are used in conjunction with biomechanical, orthopaedic and neurological clinical assessment.
Osteopathy is best know for treatment of musculo-skeletal disorders such as back and neck pain, sciatica, sporting injuries and postural strain, however it can also assist in the treatment of breathing disorders, otitis media, digestive problems and menstrual problems. Put simply, optimising structural balance allows the physiology to perform optimally.
The practice of osteopathy combines current medical knowledge with the osteopathic philosophy. Scientific plausibility and evidence-based outcomes have a high priority in patient treatment and case management. Osteopathy is a patient centred approach to health care rather than disease centred.
Osteopaths asses and treat the whole person, not just the symptomatic region. So for example if a patient presents with headache they will be structurally assessed from head to toe. This is because the primary cause may be remote from the symptoms.
The philosophy of osteopathy is based on four key principles:- The body is a functional unit composed of interrelating parts or systems.
- The body has a tendency to homeostasis. The body’s natural tendency is to self regulate.
- Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated. Changes to structure influence function and conversely changes to function influence structure.
- Rational treatment is based on the above three principles.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises the Osteopathic concept of somatic dysfunction as being scientifically proven, and the British Medical Association also recognises Osteopathy as a discrete medical discipline.
In Australia, Osteopaths are statutorily registered practitioners in all states and territories. Five years, full-time university training is required as entry level to practice. A Bachelor of Science and Masters in Osteopathy is the award.
Massage
Lisa Higgins is a Remedial Massage therapist, who offers Remedial Massage, Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Craniosacral Therapy. She has been practicing since 2006 in both Sydney and Dubai.
Her specialty is working with cancer patients post treatment to help reduce the effects of lymphedema.
The three treatments she offers are very different but each caters to a specific need.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is effective in clearing toxins from the body, as well as helping to reduce fluid retention from a variety of causes ranging from PMT, oedema, lymphedema, sinusitis, pre and post surgery or injury. It is particularly effective in reducing lymphedema post cancer. Regular treatment can help to boost the immune system. MLD is a very gentle, relaxing treatment, suitable for most conditions.
Remedial Massage is a firmer massage that works deep into muscles, helping to relieve aches and pains due to stress or poor posture. The massage is tailored to suit the needs of the individual – a deep massage to release muscle aches and pains, or a more gentle massage for relaxation.
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle therapy that helps the body balance itself resulting in deep relaxation and a general release of aches and pains and an increase in vitality.
Prescription Molded Orthotics
With approximately 80% of the population suffering from some form of lower limb biomechanical dysfunction, there are a multitude of conditions which can result. Often the root causes of such conditions can be found in excessive pronation of the feet.
Pronation does not occur in isolation - it can cause a chain reaction of muscular and structural misalignment, resulting in painful conditions being experienced in the ankles, knees, legs, hip and lower back. By treating the cause of the pain (i.e. pronation) with custom molded Orthotics, and realigning the lower limb to its optimal functioning position, painful symptoms can be alleviated.
Common conditions treatable with custom molded prescription Orthotics include:- Achilles Tendonitis
- Bunions
- Knee Pain
- Low Back Pain
- Mortons Neuroma
- Osgood Schlatters
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Shin Splints
Exercise Prescription
Research has shown that back pain, like other pain syndromes, is less likely to recur in patients that have manual / manipulative therapy and prescriptive exercise together compared with control groups that only underwent manipulative treatment or exercise therapy alone.
At Vital Lifestyle we provide tailored exercise prescriptions for our patients to reinforce what is done in treatment and prevent recurrence of the presenting problem. A balance of stretching and strengthening exercise on a regular basis is essential to healthy joint function in our busy, sedentary, modern world.

"Work-style" is a part of lifestyle not just a means to an end. Many people go to work believing that their job takes a huge toll on body, mind and spirit, but it "earns them a living". Five days work to earn two days rest & recreation doesn't sound like a good return on investment!
No job is ergonomically sound and stress free; therefore we need some Vital Strategies in order to experience more pleasure at work and play.
Vital Lifestyle simply means choosing the healthy habits of winners & achievers.
The baby boomers are predicted to live longer than any other generation, yet the major diseases are on the increase and our children are predicted to die younger!
The Solution
Vital Lifestyle strategies for more pleasure at work and play.
- Vital tips for being humans. The lessons that our bodies teach us. Intuitive intelligence from past experience. Being "response-able" for our health and vitality. Remember default mode is function.
- Health maintenance requires correction 97% of the time. Set and forget could land us on the rocks. Look, Listen and take Action.
- Personal vitality balance sheet. The assets and liabilities to our health. Make an agreement with yourself today. Choose one more asset and drop one liability.
- Use it or loose it. What exercise will you do regularly? 30 Minutes, 3-4 times per week, lightly puffing. Balance strength and stability with stretch and mobility.
- Inspire yourself! Breathing is the key. Martial-arts meet modern western bio-mechanics. Pull your belly in as you exhale. Repeat this for every 15 minutes of sitting.
- Posture is powerful ... or not! We can lie with our mouths, but our bodies speak our minds.
Vital Sitting. Active sitting versus passive sitting. Understanding the biggest cause of back pain.
- Hydration 1-2 litres of water daily. Green tea, fresh juices.
- Nourishment. Say yes to fruit and vegetables, quality protein, cold pressed extra virgin olive/
macadamia oil, whole/ complex carbohydrates, Anti-oxidants. Say no to fried food, crusty bakery products, simple sugars, processed/refined food, excess alcohol and coffee, carbonated drinks.
- Quarterly maintenance schedule for real blokes. From headlights(eyes) to shock absorbers(spouses), don't forget the spark plugs(testes and prostate)!
- Balancing the Adrenalin Factor. "Rest or become restless" - Mr. Curly.
We have all learned much about our own bodies, how they work and what they need. We all get distracted. We all forget. Michael is here to remind you and motivate you! QUALIFICATION DETAILS
